DCU Spotlight: Joseph Gordon-Levitt Attached to Sandman

Deadline received an exclusive regarding Joseph Gordon-Levitt to star, direct, and to produce the Vertigo title, Sandman.

Not too long ago, David Goyer (witer of Man of Steel) pitched his treatment the Vertigo character to Warner Bros. Now, it seems that company will be pursuing it. Here is the description of the title:

The Sandman series shifts between horror and fantasy, and the central character is Morpheus, the personification of dreams. After being held captive 70 years, Morpheus escapes, gains revenge and rebuilds his crumbling kingdom while trying to adapt to the times. Warner Bros has tried for some time to get a script right, but they may have finally cracked it.

According to the exclusive, Gordon-Levitt might be starring and directing the Sandman movie. He has confirmed his involvement by tweeting that he is honored to be working with Goyer and Neil Gaiman (writer of Sandman). Gordon-Levitt has even made it clear that he will be involved as a producer of the movie in his newest tweet.

Warner Bros. is currently looking for a writer and director for the movie. Maybe the movie might need a horror genre director like James Wan (director of The Conjuring) who might be too high profiled and is currently working on Fast & Furious 7 for 2014. Wan is trying to stretch beyond his horror themed directorial work. So, this might not be something Wan would want to do, but the movie is pretty high profiled he might rethink his decision.

If Wan was to direct, then Leigh Whannell (co-writer of Conjuring and Saw) might be able to hop on board to give the fans the true taste of horror fantasy. If Wan and Whannell are not going to be part of it at all, then possibly someone who be might be underrated to director the movie like Gareth Edwards who is currently on Godzilla (2014). Since the first trailer, Edwards displays a lot of dark imagery that will not only impact comic book fans but also the general audience. Who do you think can direct and/or write this movie?
