DCU Spotlight: Superman Casting

DC Universe Spotlight

The upcoming "Superman: Man of Steel" film directed by Zack Snyder and produced by Christopher Nolan has made headlines recently with several casting announcements over the last few weeks.

Now we all know by now that Henry Cavill ("The Tudors" "Immortals") will play the blue boy scout, Clark Kent/Superman in the upcoming film. Cavill is a fairly young and upcoming actor who looks like an excellent choice on paper. As film-goers, we will get to see some of Cavill's acting chops in the upcoming 2011 films, "The Cold Light of Day" and Immortals", both are action films.

In addition to Cavill, the roles of Martha and Jonathan Kent. Diane Lane ("Unfaithful") will portray Martha Kent, an announcement that has some fans scratching their heads due to Lane's age. Nonetheless, I believe is capable of presenting those strong sense of morals onto the screen that the character is associated with. Meaning, Kevin Costner ("Field of Dreams" "The Untouchables") will play Johnathan Kent. Personally, I think this is an excellent casting choice, Costner has that All-American charm that the character of Jonathan Kent needs to have. I think together, Diane Lane and Kevin Costner are an excellent pairing. The question now becomes; How big of a role will they have "Superman: Man of Steel"?

Yes, there's been more casting announcements. The Academy-Award nominated actress, Amy Adams ("The Fighter" "Junebug") has been cast as the tough-as-nails female journalist, Lois Lane. Probably the most exciting casting announcement to come from the film so far. Adams is a perfect choice, she has displayed in her body of work, a tremendous amount of range. She is able to play spunky, energetic, strong woman, while seeing success in several romantic comedies. That combination should make Adams the perfect love interest for Superman.

And finally, we now know who the main villain is going to be! Academy-Award nominated actor, Michael Shannon ("Revolutionary Road" "Boardwalk Empire" "The Runaways") has been slated to portray the Superman villain, General Zod. And I could not approve of this more. Shannon has been one of my favorite actors for sometime now, and he should be very strong in the role, having played villainous roles in the past. General Zod did appear in the Richard Donner Superman films, with actor, Terrence Stamp playing the character. Zod is an intellectual and physical threat to Superman, mainly because he has similar powers being a fellow Kryptonian. The difference is, Zod doesn't share the hope in humanity that Superman does. Shannon truly is the best casting choice they could have made for the role.

Hopefully, that was plenty of casting announcements to hold you over for a while. We still have yet to know who will play Perry White and Jimmy Olsen, or if they will even appear in the film, but I sure hope so. This casting news has me much more optimistic about the film, especially because Zack Snyder has yet to direct a film that I have found to be good (Writer's Note: If you haven't seen Snyder's "Sucker Punch" yet, save yourself, don't!). "Superman: Man of Steel" is written by David Goyer, directed by Zack Snyder, produced by Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas. Snyder begins shooting in August of this year, for a December 2012 release.
