Another great episode guys and another example of the newer format being such a great thing for the podcast as the discussions on all 3 books were great, especially the discussion for batman inc.
I also want to say congratulations to Don and Stella. I hope your big day is perfect and wish you both nothing but happiness in your future together 🙂

  • Kevin

To be honest I was pretty upset when i heard that Damian was going to be killed, because i've grown to like the character a lot but maybe this will be a way to bring the others closer to batman.
As for Don and Stella, When i made the comment on the special i was only joking and i never would have thought it had come true. so i want to say congratulations. And also blame Jon and Melina for spoiling the marrige announcement.

  • Jon

I to want to add my congratulations. I did nearly let it slip.

First off sometimes are just covers & to make you grab the book and say what the hell?!… ok.. lets look at the 5 stages of Grief.. each of the Batfamily members will "embrace or bring out charistics" of each of the stages. Each of these charactors appear in reverse order of when they were introdueced
Stage 1 Denial: (Red Robin) Tim came in at the time when he was at his lowest after the death of Jason.. makes sence.. it's fitting that Tim is there again for him. This first stage of grieving helps us to survive the loss. In this stage, the world becomes meaningless and overwhelming. Life makes no sense. We are in a state of shock and denial. We go numb. We wonder how we can go on, if we can go on, why we should go on.
Stage 2 Anger: (Red Hood) Who else to help him though this stage than the one member that is always angry. Underneath anger is pain, your pain. It is natural to feel deserted and abandoned, but we live in a society that fears anger. Anger is strength and it can be an anchor, giving temporary structure to the nothingness of loss.
Stage 3 Bargain: (Batgirl) for someone that i asume must have been bargining.. ie Before a loss, it seems like you will do anything if only your loved one would be spared. “Please God, ” you bargain, “I will never be angry at my … again if you’ll just let him/her live.” After a loss, bargaining may take the form of a temporary truce. “What if I devote the rest of my life to helping others. Then can I wake up and realize this has all been a bad dream?” I imagin Barbra  must have felt his way, so i think she will help with that.
Stage 4 Depression: (Catwoman)  This depressive stage feels as though it will last forever. It’s important to understand that this depression is not a sign of mental illness. It is the appropriate response to a great loss. We withdraw from life, left in a fog of intense sadness, wondering, perhaps, if there is any point in going on alone? Why go on at all. Catwoman could represent the "contact" that he needs to snap him out of his depression.
Stage 5 Acceptance : (Nightwing) Acceptance is often confused with the notion of being “all right” or “OK” with what has happened. This is not the case. Most people don’t ever feel OK or all right about the loss of a loved one. This stage is about accepting the reality that our loved one is physically gone and recognizing that this new reality is the permanent reality. We will never like this reality or make it OK, but eventually we accept it. We learn to live with it. It is the new norm with which we must learn to live. We must try to live now in a world where our loved one is missing. I know that both Bruce and Dick have lost parrents, but Dick was older than Bruce, and maybe the voice of you did it once and so did I (twice with Jason), and you can come out on the other side and function again.
I'm telling you Harper Row (or as i say Harper Rowbin) is coming, Snyder has said in a few interviews that Harper is gonna have a big part in the life of Batman (he has said this in his interviews about the first introduction of the character), I'm not happy about it but it's coming, and dare i say that Huntress will give Harper her Earth 2 Robin costume (an idea, but would be kinda fitting). but i think it's poor that she was created the same way Damian was… to be Robin… i think Tim should come back but oh well.
and issue of Batman 18 will be seen though the eyes of Harper… i would rather have Damian back.. but i hated Damian at first, but now i have grown to love him, Tim will alwasy be my fav.. but we wshall see.

My first reaction to Damian's death was to wonder if Batman and Robin will be cancelled, which I'm sure it will be after it concludes it's guest star run. As for Harper Row, I wouldn't mind her being Robin after some long character development and at least a year or two without a Robin in Batman's life.

In Nightwing the only problem I had with the art was the faces. The artist didn't have any sense with how to draw them in perspective and the features were inconsistent. I have no idea where this Sonia Branch thing is supposed to go. The character has always seemed sinister since her introduction in Black Mirror. This last arc with the destruction of Haly's was just so anti climactic, there is all this development but no pay off in sight. So, I have a feeling this Sonia Branch situation if going to go nowhere.

And in Batman The Dark Knight, I'm interested to see how this Mad Hatter story will turn out. He's always some crazy potential because of his mind control technology but I've never paid attention to him much because of his bases on a public domain character.

All in all, I'm still bummed out by the death of Damian. He was an interesting character and one that I was eager to see develop as Robin to Bruce's Batman. Batman and Robin is one of my favorite books and I have been enjoying seeing there relationship develop father and son as well as Batman and Robin. However, again there's not going to be any pay off to there relationship because he was killed off. So, I'm eager to see how related characters are going to deal with his passing in there various titles, even though I know it's all a ploy and thinly valid attempt to buy unrelated books (World's Finest I'm looking at you!!). Nevertheless, I'm going to get them anyways as I'm still grieving.

As for wedding announcement, congratulations. "It would move me to tears… If I still had tears to shed."

  • John

Thanks for another great podcast! You've made some good points on positive things about Batman Inc #8.  When I first read it, I couldn't enjoy because I was so ticked about the spoiler.  Thanks for giving me a reason to re-read it and give it the chance it deserved.  Thanks guys!

  • Alex

Congratulations Stella and Don! I'm very happy for you two!
Excellent podcast as always. The reason why I didn't continue reading Batman and Robin was because I felt it was backtracking in Damian's character development and being that you guys weren't giving it the highest reviews, I dropped it. I wasn't a big fan of the title after Grant Morrison left, so being that I was underwhelmed by the first few issues, I decided to invest my time in other comics. I was getting my Batman and Robin fix from Batman Inc. anyways (A title I disliked pre-New 52).  However, I was wrong about picking it back up at Death of the Family. I picked it up again at issue #8 and then went back and read the other issues. At that point, he became one of my favorite comic book characters, and now he is my second favorite character of current comic books (Tim, what have they done to you?).  I dropped Nightwing, Batgirl, and Red Hood and picked them up again for the Death of Family, along with Teen Titans and Suicide Squad, because I thought they were important to the story. However, after reading the most recent issues, I was still underwhelmed by those titles. I'm going to keep reading Batgirl and Red Hood (for Jason) for now. Dick Grayson is in my top 3 comic book characters, but I'm just not digging the Nightwing title right now. The odd thing is, that title has been better than those, however, I think there's been a lot more interesting ideas in Batgirl and Red Hood, just bad execution, unless Kyle Higgins decides to step up his game.  If I can't get Chuck Dixon, I would really want Scott Snyder to write Nightwing.
I agree with you all on Batman Inc #8. Damian's death felt real sudden and I think Death of the Family really influenced my opinion. It was a great issue, but with the leak and having no real repercussions and down time from that event, it made it seem odd. In retrospect, it makes sense and was well done, but unfortunately I had those factors weighing in. I never knew about Damian dying from any comic related source, I found it through some news site. I think that's ridiculous. That's another factor! Luckily the next issue of Batman and Robin made up for it. It's one of the most respectful comic books I ever read.

  • Steven

Wow, congratulations to Don and Stella. Please post some wedding pictures.

  • YOU ARE THE MEDIAAA! LOL. Fantastic episode guys. havent listened in a while, so it was great to listen to this episode. I have mixed feelings about Damians death. I liked the way he whent out, but i was still super bumed about it.(He was in top 10 possibly 5 comic book character.) It just seemed kind of cheap and a bit selfish for Grant to introduce him, then just kill him. It seemed like sort of an "Alan Moore" move. As in, it seemed like he didnt whant anyone else to kill him or do anything with the character. Im surprised  i can still think straight from how many times i (figuratively) banged myn head against a wall while reading the dc ZERO issues. I think DC  is So irresponsable with the timeline. it isn riduculas that they cant keep their dates straight. They are getting Lucas Prequals syndrom, because they dont know what they are doing or what they whant ti do. Anyway keep up the good work.

  • Way to wake up the parents Joe lol ;)!
