According to the LA Times, Warner Bros. has passed on purchasing a slot during this year's Superbowl to advertise The Dark Knight Rises. This is not a huge surprise to some as Warner also passed on using the Superbowl four years ago for The Dark Knight. However, back in 2005, Batman Begins was featured in a thirty second spot.
The big case is that a Superbowl ad costs a lot of money with an amount running in the four million dollar range and in turn can eat away a large amount of a film's marketing budget. It is also known that spending a ton of money on marketing does not always translate into a large box office return.
