Birds of Prey is shaping up to be a tent-pole film in the DCEU with Margot Robbie’s “R-rated girl gang” movie bringing in some top talent for both the heroes and the villain. Rather than holding for DC Film Update, we will be sharing the big news for this film since it deals directly with the Batman Universe. Here are all the updates you need to know that have been revealed up to now:
Announced on Monday, the movie is set to be released on February 7, 2020. Margot Robbie will reprise her role as Harley Quinn in the film and serve as a producer for the film as well. Cathy Yan will, in fact, direct the film as previous rumors stated. In addition to Robbie producing, Sue Kroll and Bryan Unkeless will also serve as producers for the film.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane, Scott Pilgrim) has been cast as Huntress while Jurnee Smollett-Bell (Underground) has nabbed the role of Black Canary.
The Birds of Prey will be protecting Gotham in Batman’s absence. According to Daniel RPK on Twitter: “From what I understand there is a line in the script that someone mention how no one has seen Batman in Gotham for two years and that’s about it. He’s probably with The League or maybe they’ll answer it in his solo movie somehow.” Whether or not they’ll delve into the mystery of his absence has not been confirmed but the lack of Barbara Gordon in the film makes it seem like this will be a wholly Bat-free affair.
Renee Montoya and Cassandra Cain have yet to be cast and currently, there are no big front runners being floated for either role. Black Mask, however, is rumored to be the villain in the film with Ewan McGregor and Sharlto Copley being eyed for the role after Sam Rockwell passed.
We can expect much more news to be released in the coming months including additional casting and storyline details. Are you excited for the film? Let us know your take in the comments below!
