Overview: We learn about Kate’s last year on Coryana.
Synopsis (spoilers ahead): Kate is in her jet, soaring at the speed of sound mulling over the fact that Batman had sent her to investigate the Many Arms of Death terrorist organization. She is upset because the queen of this organization is Safiyah, her savior from her despair and ex-lover.
In the last year on the island, we see that Kate is investigating the death of the foxes on the island. Safiyah shares that she knows who the suspect is: the warlord Maksim. Maksim argues his innocence in front of Safiyah and the council of warlords on the island. He accidentally insults Safiyah and he asks her for her forgiveness. She forgives and tells him to go home to his wife. Yet, Safiyah double-crosses him and she has Maksim killed.
Kate retreats to the medical hatch to further investigate the cause of death of the foxes. She realizes that due to her fall into the coral reef where she cracked her skull, she brought the bacteria onto the island.
She confronts Safiyah and asks why she had Maksim killed. Safiyah explains that she would do anything to keep those she loved protected. Kate is appalled at her choice. Safiyah explains that Kate will always shift the blame from herself onto others. She tells her that she is a drunk, that she is an addict, and that Kate will make an addiction out of anything including Safiyah.
Kate walks out on Safiyah and heads to the lighthouse to get gasoline for an escape boat. Tahani is commissioned by Safiyah not to let Kate leave the island. Kate defeats Tahani and escapes on her boat.
Back in the present, Kate while back in her jet, admits that Safiyah is taunting her. She heads back to Brussels where her childhood was ruined. She swears that if Safiyah hurts her sister, “Death will be our last embrace.”
Analysis: This dialogue heavy issue is a quick read with nothing major happening besides explaining what drove Kate off the island of Coryana and back to humanity. Also, this issue explains why Tahani hates her and why Safiyah is exacting revenge.
Not that this was a bad issue at all, but there is not much to analyze. Basically, it wraps up loose ends from the previous arcs for the next issue.
Marguerite Bennet once again did a masterful job of detailing Kate’s emotional trauma. The art team of Godlewski and Rauch did a wonderful job with their art and colors. This issue was really solid and sets up the next issue well. I am very excited for what is to come!
Final Thoughts: A solid story that ties up loose ends, and creates excitement for the next arc.
