If you, like most of us, missed out on attending NYCC in person, you may have missed some of the Bat-related news and announcements. Don’t you worry, because we’ve got you covered with our NYCC Comic News Wrap-Up, or more specifically news from DC Comics on everything announced at their various panels.
Duke Thomas/The Signal
- Artist Cully Hamner described Duke Thomas’ new suit for his alter ego Signal as “slicked up.”
- It was never the intention to have Duke take over the role of Nightwing or Robin. He was always meant to be his own character on his own journey.
- It was hit home again that Signal very much owns the Gotham streets during the day, specifically a new neighborhood. His own Burnside, perhaps?
Batman and Catwoman
- Tom King knew from day one what Catwoman’s reaction to Bruce’s proposal was going to be.
- Going forward, their relationship will be central to the book.
- Talia is none too pleased with Batman and Catwoman’s engagement, expect a fight between the two women.
Batman: White Knight
- Writer Sean Gordon Murphy was heavily inspired by the animated series and Tim Burton films.
- Batman: White Knight will include newly designed versions of Nightwing and Batgirl
- Murphy already has a sequel idea for White Knight.
Batman/TMNT II
- James Tynion says of the Batman/TMNT II series: I grew up with the Turtles and with Batman…but being able, in the first volume, to bring the Turtles into Gotham City and unleashing them and the Shredder and the Foot Clan was a lot of fun.
- Bebop and Rocksteady are going to get their hands on Bane’s venom
Detective Comics
- Expect Tim Drake to make his escape from Mr. Oz
- Tynion describes the book as “basically X-Men starring the Bat-Family.”
- Tim Drake’s return in the storyline, “A Lonely Place of Living” is inspired by his origin as well as Tynion’s love of the character.
Batwoman
- Marguerite Bennett was attracted to Batwoman because “she’s a screw up” and was also inspired by how the animated series allowed it’s female characters to be flawed.
- Scarecrow’s roll in the Batwoman series to bring to the surface her insecurities and flaws.
All-Star Batman
- Scott Snyder saw All-Star Batman as a break from the main title, and the pressure of constantly topping each story he told, as is expected in the central book of the line. His goal was to tell a story featuring a myriad of villains and was pleasantly surprised with how well the book sold.
Odds and Ends
- Starting January 31, DC will team up members of the Young Animals with well-known DC heroes. Of note is the Mother Panic/Batman Special, no word yet on whether it will be the normal creators attached or a new writer and artist.
- Scott Snyder and artist Sean Gordon Murphy are teaming up for Batman: Last Knight. Snyder gave a few hints on the tale: Batman suddenly wakes up and he’s … young, but he wakes up in this post-apocalyptic wasteland, crawling out of the sand in this Gotham City that’s been ruined. He’s got the Joker’s head chained to his belt, but it’s alive and like ‘You gotta move, kid!’ It’s got old Wonder Woman, Baby Superman — it’s like my Lone Wolf and Cub Batman story.
- After his work with Snyder on Last Knight, Murphy will go back to working as writer and artist on future projects instead of collaborations. Snyder said that this will be his last main Batman story for awhile.
- Expect to see the core Robins and Batgirl show up in a future Detective Comics arc.
- A new origin for Clayface is inbound in the upcoming annual for the series in January.
Batman: Lost
