Nightwing has seen quite a few shakeups in his life recently. From his move to Bludhaven to his breakup with Defacer, Dick has not had the smoothest life. Unfortunately, the changes keep coming as DC has revealed that Benjamin Percy is set to take over writing duties on the title this May, the second creator change in the past year. Beginning with issue #44, Percy, along with artist Christopher Mooneyham, will weave a tale that looks to have a hint of cyberpunk influence. According to the official synopsis:
In this arc, change is on the horizon when a new technologist sets his sights on Blüdhaven, creating a holographic, interconnected city where everyone is an individual and part of a larger network. It’s the internet made physical. Gentrification on gigabyte-laced steroids. But when this new utopia encroaches on his turf, Nightwing starts to uncover a sinister plot based not on revenge…but on a reckoning.
Percy himself seems psyched to work on the character, saying “The best way to approach NIGHTWING is as a high-octane, adrenaline-fueled mystery and adventure, I’m going to crank up the volume on that world, dose it full of steroids and poison, and dream up a digital nightmare that will ultimately impact the entire DCU.”
An interesting note in the announcement for Percy’s run on the book, the new run also brings with it a release schedule change, as the book is going from bi-weekly to monthly. DC just slipped that into the announcement, what it means is unknown at this point. It could be that they want to give Percy and Mooneyham more breathing room with a less hectic schedule, or possibly Nightwing is not doing the sales number that DC expects out of the character. The timing is also a little suspect as Sam Humphries took over writing duties on the book from Tim Seeley back in December. No word yet on the reasons for this second creative shakeup since the Rebirth launch of the title. Either way, it seems that changes are coming to a number of Bat-Books in the coming months.
