Batman Odyssey
The Tooth and Nothing but the Tooth!
Batman Odyssey by Neal Adams just reached its penultimate issue recently and what strikes me most about this series? No, it’s not all the callbacks to the seventies Batman, nor the wide variety of characters nor the cutting edge Bat-tech.
It’s the teeth.
Man, Neal Adams loves to draw them choppers! It makes you wonder what kind of dental plan his Batman has. My first instinct was to go to my own dental insurance provider, hold up an issue and say, “I want these!”
In the above illustration Batman seems amazed at the magnificence of his own maw. Even when he’s getting shot there is no hiding those pearly whites.
And Heaven forbid anyone else’s teeth hog the lime light. Sorry Riddler not today!
Even when Batman is feeling a little, let’s call it, “out of sorts” The teeth are still hanging in there!
Maybe the JLA has the dental plan. I suppose I would have to start out as a Teen Titan just to get in on it. Certainly Aquaman has his own set of impressive choppers. Still they take a back seat to Batman’s.
No doubt this is part of Neal Adam’s style. It makes Batman look feral, aggressive and dangerous. But if I were a super villain that crossed paths with the Batman the last thing I would say to him is, “Bite me.”
