The Crisis of Infinite Directions is finally over and the DC Studios Rebirth is upon us as James Gunn delivered the plan for the Phase One of DC Studios. Gunn titled this first chapter “Gods and Monsters.” He promised big and he delivered big announcing a slew of movies and shows. Let’s get into the Five Things and highlight the projects that stood out.
Superman: Legacy
James Gunn calls this the true beginning of the new era of DC Studios. Superman is back and is slated to come out on July 11, 2025. Gunn is writing and says that it is not an origin story and will focus on Superman “balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing.”
The image shown along with the announcement is from All-Star Superman, written by Grant Morrison and drawn by Frank Quitely. It has been far too long since Superman has headlined his own film, and I am excited that Gunn is using Superman as the true start of his eight to ten year plan.
The Brave and the Bold
Batman and Robin. The Dynamic Duo. Gunn and his team are bringing them back. Have no fear- this will not affect Matt Reeves and The Batman as that movie will live on and still happen under an Elseworlds banner.
The Brave and the Bold will feature the DCU’s Batman along with Robin. Now, this Robin will be Damian Wayne, who Gunn calls his favorite. Gunn also noted that this will be based on Grant Marrison’s epic run on the Batman title, and this film will be the start of the Bat-Family in the DCU.
Batman fans will have their cake and eat it too, with a solo Batman with Robert Pattinson with The Batman: Part Two and the Bat-Family coming to the forefront with The Brave and the Bold as a major part of the DC Studios Rebirth.
Lanterns
Space cops with power rings. Say no more. I’m in.
But in all seriousness, a True Detective style show on HBO with Hal Jordan and John Stewart leading the way has the makings of epic television. Gunn teases that other members of the Corps may pop up and that Hal and John will discover a mystery that will tie into the larger story that they are telling.
Also, note that this is different from the Green Lantern show that was first teased at DC Fandome a few years ago, with that show officially being canceled.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow
Superman isn’t the only member of the House of El coming to the big screen. Based on the recent Tom King miniseries of the same name, Gunn says this version of Supergirl is a much more jaded character than Superman, as she was raised on a chunk of Krypton and saw everyone she knew die.
Gunn says this will be “a big science fiction epic film.” I think this has massive potential as perhaps while Superman protects Earth, Supergirl will be out in space and exploring the other planets in the DCU. Also, with a third Wonder Woman film in limbo, this film can help bring in the female audience as well.
Paradise Lost
Speaking of Wonder Woman, Paradise Lost is described as a Game of Thrones style show taking place on Themyscira, which we all know is the birthplace of Wonder Woman. I think it is implied that this is almost a prequel series, and we won’t see Diana herself but perhaps will be about her ancestors.
I think this is smart by DC Studios. While they figure out what the deal is between Gal Gadot and Wonder Woman, this way they can still focus on that massive part of the DCU.
This was just the tip of the iceberg. I did not even mention a Booster Gold show, a Swamp Thing movie, and a movie starring The Authority. Shazam 2, The Flash, Blue Beetle, and Aquaman 2 are still coming, but right now the future is bright as a DC fan. This slate gives you everything. The World’s Finest leading the way, unique stories featuring different characters, comedy, horror, and drama. There is strong leadership up top, which has been missing for so long. It truly is a Rebirth for DC Studios.
