The upcoming Epix drama Pennyworth has found its Alfred and Thomas Wayne. Jack Bannon has been cast as the show’s titular character, with Ben Aldridge cast as a young Thomas Wayne. Pennyworth will tell the story of a world not only before Batman but before Bruce. Based on characters created by Bill Finger and published by Bob Kane, the show will feature ten episodes on EPIX created by Gotham showrunner Bruno Heller.
The show will follow Alfred who is a former British SAS soldier in his twenties, who forms a security company and goes to work with a young billionaire Thomas Wayne in 1960s London. Alfred is described as: “a boyishly handsome, cheerful, charming, clever young man from London. Honest, open-faced and witty; you’d never take him for an SAS killer. Alfred doesn’t know how to reconcile the kind-hearted boy he used to be with the cold, calculated killer he was forced to become. He’s a man on the make, who doesn’t know what to make of himself yet.”
While Thomas Wayne is described as: “a young, fresh-faced billionaire hailing from the east coast of the United States. Confident and extremely disciplined, this young aristocrat meets an unlikely business partner in Alfred Pennyworth.”
It seems Alfred will have a lot more in common with the darkness of the future vigilante’s world than we realized. Production is scheduled to begin on October 22 at Warner Bros. Studios in the UK. Executive produced by both Bruno Heller and Danny Cannon who also headed up Gotham, the series is expected to release in 2019.
