So I am sure that some of you are familiar with the sudden surge of rumors out on the internet questioning whether Batman's famous teenage sidekick, Robin the Boy Wonder, will be appearing in Christopher Nolan's upcoming The Dark Knight Rises. These rumors have really taken off after the rumor of Joseph Gordon-Levitt "in talks" to join the cast on the threequel, as well as a report coming from Michigan's WILX website. The website stated that crew members of The Dark Knight Rises were recently scouting possible film locations at Michigan's Grand Ledge. The website also stated that they were looking for water-based plants that are to be used for a hideout, for Batman's sidekick Robin.
What do I think of all this?
First off, I think the wording of the report is absolutely hilarious; "Sources say the area is being considered as a hideout for Batman sidekick Robin.” Why in the world would Robin have his very own hideout in this film, when he has yet to be introduced into Nolan's universe? It makes no logical sense. Not to mention that Nolan has stated repeatedly that he has no intentions of bring the character into his world. Also, the film's star, Christian Bale has gone on record as saying the following:
"If Robin crops up in one of the new Batman films, I’ll be chaining myself up somewhere and refusing to go to work."
And I think I agree with Bale there. Other reports are calling it "Robin's cave", or the introduction of a "Nightwing-like" character. The idea of having Dick Grayson (assuming it would be Dick Grayson) just showing up in Gotham City, fighting crime without any "definitive" explanation is just absolute blasphemy. I mean let's think about it; how in the hell would Nolan balance the introduction of Robin in this film, along with presenting to new villains; Selina Kyle/ Catwoman and Bane. Oh! And further progress Bruce Wayne/ Batman's character and his relationship with Gotham City. And one more, remember those characters Jim Gordon and Alfred and Lucius Fox? Don't they have to play a role too? Robin being in this film would just be down right silly.
Also, I think the media needs to slow down here with all of these Joseph Gordon-Levitt rumors too. I mean the guy hasn't signed anything yet, and they are all assuming that he is without a doubt going to be in this film. I think if JGL has a role in the film, it will actually be RELEVANT to the story.
With all of these rumors having NO confirmations behind them, in addition to the comments made by both, Nolan and Bale in the past. I would venture to say that Robin's role in The Dark Knight Rises, is at this point… "highly-unlikely."
