Batman/Superman: World’s Finest 2026 Annual #1 starts with “The Hero Trap” as Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne await their respective adoptive fathers at a Middle Ages themed restaurant (picked out by Clark of course) for Fathers Day. Jonathan Kent and Alfred Pennywoth arrive. Soon, Clark and Bruce covertly tell each other that they received an alert from the JLA. Bruce excuses himself and climbs into an old pickup truck (which turns into the Batmobile).
Back inside, Jonathan ponders the menu as Alfred flashes on the numerous times he treated Batman’s injuries, clearly concerned for Bruce’s safety.
Meanwhile, Batman arrives at his destination which is (a trap) a top-secret laboratory. After fighting through Lex Luthor’s armed thugs, Batman walks through an energy door and finds the Flash who warns Batman that any attempt to escape will doom hundreds of innocents.
Back at the restaurant, Clark excuses himself and moments later becomes trapped alongside Batman and Flash. Jonathan and Alfred bond while swapping tales of raising their sons, and Pa Kent suggests they go find their boys. As the three heroes try to solve the deadly puzzle, Alfred and Pa Kent track them down, using their own distinct approach to distract the guards. The pair realize exchanging an unconscious guard for each hero will allow for them to escape.
Batman/Superman: World’s Finest 2026 Annual #1 “The Hero Trap” ends as the heroes enthusiastically reunite with their fathers before tracking down Lex. Pa Kent and Alfred share a more relaxed conversation (and breadsticks) after their unusual but rewarding Father’s Day.
Batman/Superman: World’s Finest 2026 Annual #1 “Date Night” finds Bat-Mite and Mr. Mxyzptlk going full meta and pitting Batman against Superman for the hand of Lois Lane. With Superman in orbit contending with a decaying satellite, Bruce Wayne encounters Lois and takes her to a county fair (as a favor to Superman to protect her from an attack). Bruce tries and fails to win over Lois and win her a prize (thanks to Superman’s meddling).
Batman/Superman: World’s Finest 2026 Annual #1 “Date Night” ends with Bruce wrestling a greased pig as a disgusted Lois drags Clark away, leaving the finally triumphant Bruce Wayne alone with his prize.
Analysis
Batman/Superman: World’s Finest 2026 Annual #1 offers up two more feel-good stories of yesteryear that span the past and present (at least until the next Crisis reset). Writer Mark Waid continues his favorite pastime of serving up classic Silver Age comic book tropes with a modern twist. Both “The Hero Trap” and “Date Night” play to Waid’s penchant for humorous rivalry between the World’s Finest and their supporting cast.
The awkwardness of the dinner scene between Pa Kent and Alfred is played mostly for laughs but has an undertone of fatherly love and concern for their sons running headlong into danger. Pa Kent’s wise observations serve to comfort Alfred, but not as much as the pair taking it upon themselves to rescue their boys without making it seem out of character or left field. Pa Kent’s folksy distraction and Alfred’s SAS training get the job done.
It’s also heartwarming to see Alfred and Batman drop their guard and show actual affection, in contrast to how they greeted each other in the beginning of the story. Questions arise from stories like these including why superfast Flash and Superman’s reaction time didn’t allow them to escape the trap, but where is the fun in that?
While the stakes are high, it is the emotional undercurrent that provides the most tension in this story.
Watching Batman, Superman and Flash futilely brainstorm is classic, as is Batman and Flash’s facepalm when Superman rushes in. Thanks in part to artist Clay Henry, the story balances the emotional, the heroic and the humorous in equal measure. Also, one might wonder how a high-profile figure Bruce Wayne could appear at a public establishment without being mobbed, but alas, that isn’t the point of the story.
Batman/Superman: World’s Finest 2026 Annual #1 “Date Night” is mostly slapstick, as Superman repeatedly foils Bruce (under the sway from the Fifth Dimensional imps) and his attempts to woo Lois Lane. Pat Boutin’s minimalist art style complements Waid’s absurdist tale, as both writer and artist deliver on the repeated sight gags, wreaking havoc on one poor man’s vehicle. The exaggerated facial expressions and body language sell the story.
Final Thoughts
Batman/Superman: World’s Finest 2026 Annual #1 delivers two charmingly enjoyable stories that will delight both readers of this series and also fans of the classic tales they were inspired by. The fact that Mark Waid has a seemingly inexhaustible supply of story ideas while attracting both established and fledgling art talent into the fold is testament to the quality and love that Waid weaves into every page.
