October solicits have released and we here at TBU are experiencing another month of new books added to the slate. While no one is complaining, by any means, this marks the sixth month in a row that new titles have been added. It is starting to seem like this will continue for the foreseeable future as some of the titles kicking off in May will have their final issues in October, leading us to assume that more series could be coming in November as well. DC seems to be on a trajectory of having new titles every month and it doesn’t seem to be letting up any time soon. So what will October bring?
Typically, DC uses the month of Comic-Con International to make a number of announcements and this year was no different. There are a number of new series coming in October and some of which were announced a little while back before making their way to the solicits. First up, Kami Garcia’s Black Label title, Joker/Harley: Criminal Sanity, which was announced at the beginning of June, is joining the lineup. But that isn’t the only Joker series coming in October as it was also announced that Jeff Lemire will also have a Black Label title called Jok: Killer Smile. This is the third title to feature the Joker, but there is still more. The Year of the Villain one-shot will feature Joker as well. That makes four different titles with Joker as the lead or in a supporting role for the month of October. Coincidence? Probably not since the live-action Joker film also happens to release in October.
If Joker isn’t your flavor, don’t worry there are other series coming too. DC announced a new line of one-shots featuring major story arcs in a twisted fashion. These, Tales from the Dark Multiverse, will kick off focusing on Batman: Knightfall and continue with other story arcs we are sure to focus on. There is also a new maxi-series coming from writer Warren Ellis and artist Bryan Hitch called The Batman’s Grave. And if all of that wasn’t enough, Birds of Prey relaunches featuring Harley Quinn from writer Brian Azzarello.
October is another five Wednesday month and DC will be using that fifth week to its advantage as usual. While not coming out on the fifth week, there will be a new anthology title featuring horror stories for Halloween. There will also be a number of annuals releasing that TBU will be cover including ones for Batman, Batman and the Outsiders, and Nightwing.
A couple of points of mention, last month the solicits for September stated that Harleen would be releasing bi-monthly, but this month it is on the solicits. So that must have been a mistake as it seems to be a monthly title for its three-issue run. Young Justice is back after taking a month off in September. Despite DCeased having a one-shot out in September, the series will still wrap in October with two issues releasing during the month. Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III will wrap up its miniseries in October as planned, while the long-awaited ending to Batman: Creature of the Night, which last released its third issue in April 2018, is also set to finish up.
Over to the reprints side of things, last month brought a new line called Dollar Comics which features popular stories reprinted with the intent to get readers interested in the characters. Four issues were announced for September, while October will have two titles falling under the Batman Universe. Meanwhile, another facsimile edition will release in October featuring Batman #251. Also, there is a new line of giants releasing at comic stores and mass-market that DC mentioned at Comic-Con during a retailer summit. Little is known about these new giants other than they will have new stories featured in them and be priced at the same $4.99 as the current Walmart giants. Interestingly, the Walmart giants launched in July of last year with the Bendis story in the Batman giant starting in September. That means that the story will wrap in August meaning the Walmart exclusivity is coming to an end and these new giants are taking its place. That may mean that these will be more readily available at other retailers as well as comic shops.
Moving over to creator changes, John Romita Jr. will be coming on to Batman for two-issues. Sean Chen comes on to Batman Beyond for the month. Joelle Jones is listed as both the writer and artist for Catwoman.
That about wraps up the breakdown for October. There is a lot of things in store for the Batman Universe and we will continue to cover all of these new additions to keep you in the loop. Be sure to check out the full details for everything hitting stores in October below as well as a gallery of some of the covers coming. Let us know which books you are the most excited for this month.
