DC has released their solicitations for the month of January 2016. January will see the continuation most ongoing monthly titles, the weekly Batman and Robin Eternal, and Dark Knight III and Batman: Europa miniseries , the beginning of some new titles (Poison Ivy: Cycle of Life and Death and Suicide Squad Most Wanted: Deadshot/Katana), and the conclusion of both the “Robin War” crossover event and the final print issue of the digital first series Batman: Arkham Knight – Genesis.
In January’s issue of Dark Knight III: The Master Race #3, Batman considers turning to Superman for help, while in Batman: Europa #4, Batman and Joker stand together in the Coliseum in Rome against the enemy behind the mysterious virus they have contracted.
Batman #48 sees Jim Gordon’s Batman facing an army of people who have received powers from Mr Bloom’s seeds while Bruce Wayne meets a stranger who “could start a chain of events no one can stop.” Meanwhile, in Detective Comics #48, Jim Gordon returns to Gotham after the fallout of the Robin War and his adventures with the Justice League to face a case from his past that may determine the future of Batman. And speaking of Robin War, January also brings Robin War #2, the stunning conclusion of the crossover event from December which pitted the Robins against the Court of Owls.
In issues #14-17 of the weekly series, Batman and Robin Eternal we see that Grayson, Red Hood, Red Robin and Harper Row have finally uncovered Mother’s plot but their attempts to bring her down may not work because Cassandra Cain has gone rogue. Also, Batman/Superman #28 starts a three-part arc telling an untold story from Bruce and Clark’s early days.
Dick Grayson tries to take down Spyral from within with the help of Tiger in Grayson #16 (and the solicitation also hints that Dick’s time as a spy may “soon end in death). Batgirl #48 sees Black Canary coming in to save Barbara as the two of them try to stop the new mastermind plaguing Burnside. Jason Todd and Roy Harper team up with Joker’s Daughter (Note: Insert the biggest eye roll possible – Terry) to stop a new bunch of problems for their rent-a-hero business in Red Hood/Arsenal #8. Damian teams up with his mother, Talia al Ghul while reeling from the events of the Robin War in Robin: Son of Batman #8. And We Are Robin #8 sees Duke and his team of Robins facing a street-gang called the Jokers (maybe a tease of the origins of the gang from Batman Beyond).
In other TBU titles, Catwoman is framed for murder in New York City in Catwoman #48. Harley tries to save a friend of hers in Arkham Asylum in Harley Quinn #24. A mysterious ninja reveals herself in Black Canary #8 and opens up a whole new world to Dinah. Pamela Isley joins the plant sciences division of Gotham Botanical Gardens and is implicated in a murder of a co-worker in the first issue of the six-issue miniseries Poison Ivy: Cycle of Life and Death. Also, Deadshot and Katana star in a new six-issue miniseries of their own, Suicide Squad Most Wanted: Deadshot/Katana.
In team books, the Justice League works with the Crime Syndicate to defeat the Anti-Monitor as the Darkseid War continues in Justice League #48 and the JLA #7 sees the re-solicitation of the same issue from December but with a new cover by Brian Hitch. Red Robin tries to hold his team together after the events of Robin War in Teen Titans #16, while Hawk and Dove join the team in Titans Hunt #4.
January also sees a special “Yearbook” issue of Gotham Academy focusing on some of the supporting characters in lost adventures from the past year, with lots of artists and writers joining in to tell these stories. In an issue that reflects current events, Neo-Gotham considers whether they can afford to take on refugees from all over the world now that Brother Eye has been defeated in Batman Beyond #8. Midnighter is recruited by Spyral in Midnighter #8. And, for good measure, Starfire #8 is included in January’s TBU solicitations for no other reason than that Dick Grayson and Starfire are kissing on the cover.
Finally, January brings new issues for New Suicide Squad, Earth 2: Society, Batman/TMNT, Bamtan ’66 Meets the Man from U.N.C.L.E., Justice League 3001, DC Comics Bombshells and the final issue of Batman: Arkham Knight Genesis. Also, next year will see the beginning of Injustice: Gods Among Us – Year Five and January brings a special issue of DC Essentials: Superman/Batman #1 republishing the first chapter of the “Public Enemies” storyline.
