DC Comics has released their solicitations for the month of January 2016. February will see the continuation all ongoing monthly titles, the weekly Batman and Robin Eternal, and prequel to the Dark Knight universe. February also brings new creative teams to some books as Tim Seeley (Grayson, Batman Eternal) and Juan Ferreyra (Gotham by Midnight, Batman Eternal) take over New Suicide Squad and Greg Pak (Batman/Superman) with art by Noel Rodriguez (Red Hood and the Outlaws) start as the new team for Teen Titans.
I’ll also warn you that there are few things happening this month (particularly in the pages of Batman) that you might want to avoid being spoiled. However, since this is the nature of solicitations anyway, maybe you don’t care. Either way, consider yourselves warned.
First off, February brings a one shot prequel to The Dark Knight Returns while Dark Knight III: The Master Race goes on hiatus for a month. This issue is solicited simply as happening “Before the Dark Knight returned” but will deal with the “Joker, Poison Ivy, Selina Kyle, and the last Robin.” However, as has been reported it has been announced apart from the solicitation that the issue will explore the Joker’s murder of Jason Todd in the Dark Knight Returns universe.
In Batman #49, we finally get to see Bruce Wayne reclaim the cowl of Batman and must decide whether he can truly leave behind the tranquil life he’s had since he returned to life in order to return to the life of Batman. Meanwhile, we see other books focusing on Batman ignore this plot point completely as Jim Gordon continues to investigate a cold case from his days in the GCPD in Detective Comics #49 and we continue the untold story from Bruce and Clark’s past in Batman/Superman #29 (which was solicited incorrectly as #49) where we see Lobo come to collect a bounty that has been put on Batman’s head.
The next four weeks of Batman & Robin Eternal are solicited as including all of the Bat-family being under attack from a world-destroying weapon, Harper Row learning a secret that changes her life and makes her an enemy of the Robins, and we see a flash-back to Batman’s “blood-soaked confrontation” with Mother that Batman assumed had ended in her death.
Grayson #17 sees Dick recruiting a team of spies to help him combat what Spyral has become under the control of Tiger and Helena. Batgirl #49 will see Barbara explore the “uncharted territory” of her own mind in order to find the secret of Batgirl’s new enemy. Red Hood/Arsenal #9 pits Jason, Roy, and (eye-rolls continue to abound) Joker’s Daughter fighting the evil of Charon. Damian and Goliath are reunited in Gotham in Robin, Son of Batman #9 and the Robins continue their escalating fight with the Jokers gang in We Are Robin #9 but without the help of Duke and Riko.
Black Canary teams up with Batgirl to fight an army of martial artists in Black Canary #9. Tim’s future Batman tracks down Terry’s brother Matt in an issue of Batman Beyond that also sees the DC Universe introduction of splicers. Gotham Academy #15 will be part two of the “Yearbook” story bringing more small glimpses of the gang’s past by several different writers and artists.
In team books, the JLA has Rao on the ropes but still need a miracle to defeat him in JLA #8. The regular Justice League title is absent from February’s solicitations, but we get Justice League: Darkseid War Special #1 (which is extra-sized but still at the regular price of $3.99) instead giving the secret backstory of Darkseid’s daughter, Grail. Tim Drake tries to clear the name of the Teen Titans as a new creative team takes over in Teen Titans #17, while the team in Titans Hunt #5 continues to fight Mr. Twister. Harley contacts someone outside Bell Reve that might break her out of Task Force X in New Suicide Squad #17. In their dual book, Suicide Squad Most Wanted: Deadshot and Katana, Katana continues her fight against Kobra while Deadshot abandons his post with the Suicide Squad risking being killed by Amanda Waller for his desertion. Also, Strix (the former Talon from Batgirl and Birds of Prey) finds her place in the Secret Six but also has to fight someone from her past.
Selina deals with running from a bounty on her head and running from both Batgirl and Killer Croc in Catwoman #49. In Harley Quinn #25, we see Harley and the Joker face-to-face (which likely puts this book in a pretty firm separate continuity from the ongoing Batman series and related books). Also, we see Harley team up with Green Lantern in the next issue of the bi-monthly series Harley’s Little Black Book. And, rounding out the titles headlined by the former Gotham City Sirens trio, Poison Ivy: Cycle of Life and Death #2 sees Pamela Isley trying to solve the murder for which she has been framed before the cops start to suspect Poison Ivy.
In books outside the main DC continuity, Batman deals with Shredder as the TMNT face the possibility of being stranded in Gotham forever in Batman/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #3. February also brings a special one-shot Batman: Arkham Knight – Batgirl/Harley Quinn telling two new origin stories for these characters in the Akrham-verse.
The new solicitations also include continuing issues of Midnighter, Earth 2: Society, Batman ’66 Meets the Man from UNCLE, Justice League 3001, Injustice Year Five, and DC Comics Bombshells. See the full list of solicitations from the month of February 2016 below.
