DC Comics has released their solicitations for the month of July 2016. July will bring the second month of DC’s new “Rebirth” event which is relaunching various titles into a newly revived DC continuity. Some of these titles began in June’s solicitations with a special “Rebirth” issue of the title before renumbering with a new issue #1 and more titles follow that pattern this month. Also, please note again that some of these titles are now shipping twice monthly at DC’s new $2.99 price point.
In the pages of Batman #2-3, Tom king continues the “I Am Gotham” story in which Batman deals with a new hero in the city named Gotham eventually forcing them to work together to save the city from attack. Detective Comics #936-937 sees Batman, Batwoman and the rest of their team fighting against a new organization called Colony which threatens Gotham City while still struggling to train their new team of heroes.
July brings the “Rebirth” return of Justice League with Justice League: Rebirth #1 and Justice League #1. The Rebirth special issue seems to tell a new origin story of the Justice League with Batman and Wonder Woman being skeptical as they welcome Superman to the team. In the new issue #1, an ancient power threatens the entire earth and not even the combined strength of the Justice League might be able to stop it. Also in July, Titans #1 debuts welcoming some old members to the team and facing their most dangerous enemy yet.
More Batman-family characters will see their new Rebirth titles launched in July as well with the release of Batgirl #1, Batgirl and the Birds of Prey: Rebirth #1, Nightwing: Rebirth #1, Nightwing #1, and Red Hood and the Outlaws: Rebirth #1. Barbara sets out on her new training adventures in Asia in Batgirl #1 while Batgirl and Black Canary get the Birds of Prey back together bringing Helena Bertinelli (officially announced now to be the same character from Grayson who is becoming Huntress again) into the team as they square off against someone who has discovered Barbara’s history as Oracle (again explicitly brought back into continuity) and is using that title for evil. We see Dick Grayson come back to Gotham after his time as a spy to reclaim the title of Nightwing (and the original blue suit) in the pages of Nightwing: Rebirth #1 and begin to work with a new mentor in the beginning of an arc called “Better than Batman” in Nightwing #1. Additionally, Jason Todd solidifies Red Hood’s identity as a villain after an encounter with Batman and teams up with Bizarro and a fallen Amazon named Artemis to take down Gotham’s criminal networks from the inside in Red Hood and the Outlaws: Rebirth #1.
Several New 52/Post-Flashpoint titles also continue into July until “Rebirth” brings them to an end. Batman fights against Rewire as they are both manipulated by Spellbinder in Batman Beyond #14. Harley Quinn tries to “burn the place down” as one ongoing series ends this month and her Rebirth ongoing begins next month in Harley Quinn #30. Harley Quinn and Her Gang of Harleys #4 find the gang in a fight against Harley Sinn who is holding Harley prisoner on the Island of Horrible Death. Harley is also spotlighted in the final issue of New Suicide Squad in an issue which claims to delve into her mind as she wrestles with both her past and her future. Lastly, the Teen Titans find themselves trying to prove themselves before Amanda Waller shuts the team down in Teen Titans #22.
July also brings new issues of Earth 2 Society, DC Comics Bombshells, Injustice God’s Among Us Year Five, and the debut issue of Batman ’66 Meets Steed and Mrs Peel.
Also, it has recently been announced that DC has cancelled their June solicitation for Dark Knight III: The Master Race #6 and has yet to reschedule it as of the release of these July solicitations.
