The days of referring to DC’s unnamed streaming service as just that are over as the official name for the platform has finally been revealed. Henceforth known as DC Universe, the streaming service still doesn’t have an official release date, but we do at least know what shows will be available at launch, or shortly after.
First up is Titans, produced by Greg Berlanti, the same creative minds behind the CW’s collection of DC Shows, and will focus on Robin, Beast Boy, Raven, Starfire, and Hawk and Dove. The official photos have given us hope that the show will follow in the footsteps of their CW brethren but some set photos haven’t been as great. Though to be fair, some of Supergirl’s set photos were a far cry from what actually appeared on-screen so I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt at least until we see some actual footage.
Perhaps one of the most anticipated titles coming to DC Universe is the third season of Young Justice, subtitled Outsiders. Featuring the introduction of animated incarnations of Spoiler, the show brings back the original creative team and voice cast, which should mean a guaranteed hit. Let’s just hope the show does well enough for additional seasons as we’re currently in the midst of a dry spell for great animated superhero shows outside of the short-form programming of Constantine, The Ray, and Vixen on the CW Seed streaming platform.
While we don’t have too many concrete details on the third show, we do know that Harley Quinn will have her own animated title on the platform. The story will follow Harley’s split from the Joker and the show will be aimed at an older crowd, though whether that will translate to more violence, language, or sexual content is anyone’s guess at this point. Let’s hope their goal is a more mature story for one of DC’s most popular characters.
We have also seen the first logo for Swamp Thing, a series being developed with help from Aquaman director James Wan. Like Titans, Swamp Thing will be a live-action series and is currently early in development so we don’t have a cast but The Hollywood Reporter had some plot details:
The drama follows what happens when CDC researcher Abby Arcane returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana, in order to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus. There, she develops a surprising bond with scientist Alec Holland — only to have him tragically taken from her. But as powerful forces descend on Houma, intent on exploiting the swamp’s mysterious properties for their own purposes, Abby will discover that the swamp holds mystical secrets, both horrifying and wondrous — and the potential love of her life may not be gone after all.
Finally, with all the announcements of new shows, it seems as if Metropolis, the show that was to focus on Lois Lane and not feature Superman has been placed on the back burner for now. Perhaps DC is waiting to see if Krypton on SyFy takes off before investing more resources in the supporting cast of the Man of Steel. With Superman showing up on Supergirl and his big screen appearances I can see why they wouldn’t want a third actor taking up the mantle, but leaving him out completely may be a bit too far of a stretch for fans.
Though we don’t have a release date for the platform, I would predict seeing it go live this fall to coincide with the return of DC’s other television shows. Though if the service will drop every episode of a show at once similar to Netflix or space them out in weekly episodes is yet to be confirmed. I for one would love to binge Young Justice in one long weekend.
