Absolute Batman #11 begins with a story. Born in Santa Prisca to a rebel leader. Bane’s grandfather led the rebels, then his father, and now him. The rebellion takes control of the Santa Prisca capital before they are captured and imprisoned for close to 10 years. The father tells the son that they will not break. The son eats rats in the prison to survive and learns to fight.

After 11 years in the prison, Bane leads a prison escape as he and other inmates take over the prison and commandeer boats off the island. His father gives him his famous mask. Bane and his crew make it to an island where they run into a man in white. We finally get another meeting with this universe’s Joker. The Joker talks to Bane but never laughs, the father thinks. Whatever was offered to Bane is refused and Joker goes off into a helicopter and flies off. The father looks at Bane with such love and admiration and hugs his son. Bane then crushes his father and kills him.

Bane starts his ciminal empire. The venom that runs through his body allows him to control every muscle in his body and makes him super smart. He knows every fighting technique and every strategy a person would need in a battle.

We get another confrontation between Bane and Batman. Bane destroys Batman thoroughly and cuts off both his arms and smashes his face in. Bane drags him back to Ark M and Batman is operated on. We see the full operation done on Bruce and he is a suped up venom infused Batman.

This is being narrated by Alfred on what could have happened. He is proud Bruce wasn’t broken by Bane but knows that Bane will go after what will really break him- by going after his friends. The issue ends with Bane confronting Harvey, Eddie, and Oswald.

Analysis

Absolute Batman #11 was a bit of a rollercoaster for me. I liked the origin of Bane. Shades of the main universe, shades of The Dark Knight Rises. Growing up in a war torn country, being in prison for a decade, running his own organization. I really liked it.

Then I went for a loop when he fought Batman and cut off his limbs and turned him into a cross between Bane, the Punisher, and a wacked out 90s character. But it turns out that it was just a bit of vision of what would have happened had Bruce been broken by Bane in the previous issue.

But then we get a great ending with Bane prepared to take out three of Bruce’s closest friends. More on that- Bane is behind Waylon becoming a full Killer Croc. Will he scar and corrupt Harvey, Oz, and Eddie and turn them into their traditional DC comics counterparts? I kind of hope not but who knows what Snyder has up his sleeve.

We see the Joker again and find out that he is behind the scenes of this Bane operation. We know he doesn’t laugh. And that is pretty much all we know. And he was surrounded by a bunch of babes in bikinis. Snyder writing to Clay Mann’s strengths.

I wonder if this will be a one off for Mann or if he will continue on this Bane arc. I am a big fan of Mann but his art fits more of the mainline than the Absoilite especially compared to Nick Dragotta.

Who knows where Snyder will go next. As said Absolute Batman #11 was quite a ride. I assume #12 will focus on Bruce and Waylon after their escape.

Comic Book Review: Nightwing #129

by Ian Miller August 20, 2025
written by Ian Miller

In this review of Nightwing #129, Nightwing continues through the Fifth Dimensional nightmare world of Titans Tower, and gets help from an expected but unexpected source!

Nightwing #129
“Others, Finale”
Writer: Dan Watters
Art and Main Cover: Dexter Soy
Colors: Veronica Gandini
Variant Covers: Jorge Fornes, Juan Ferreyra, Serg Acuna
Page Count: 32 pages
Release Date: 8/20/2025

This review contains spoilers

Our narrator opens Nightwing #129 talking about making chicken soup for sickness, just as Dick used to get as a kid. Nightwing meets the mutated form of his dog Haley inside of Nite-Mite’s constructed realm of Titanis. Nightwing and Haley’s bond is strong, despite the mutation, and the giant dog monster uses Nightwing’s Spheric Solutions Anti-5th-Dimension stick to break out of Nightwing-Prime’s jail. Nightwing and Haley battle Nightwing-Prime, who believes he is Superman’s cousin from Krypton. Nightwing smells chicken soup, however, which flashes him back to a memory of Alfred making it for him as a kid. The narrator reveals herself as Babs, Oracle, making existential chicken soup to heal Nite-Mite from the pain he experienced (caused by the Yanni, though she doesn’t know that). The “soup” heals Nite-Mite as he understands Nightwing is a healer himself. Nightwing realizes that Nightwing-Prime is actually Bryce Moran, the 11 year old kid from the Teddy gang who wanted to prove himself to Nightwing. Bryce refuses to go back to normal and flies away, but the rest of the tower returns to normal and Babs finds Dick and Haley. She explains Nite-Mite is sleeping, so he can’t turn Bryce back yet, and Nightwing kisses her passionately.

Outside, as Titans Tower goes back to normal, Olivia Pearce of Spheric Solutions and ally of Yanni makes a speech about her partnership with Nightwing, despite Nightwing’s protestations. Nightwing resumes his watch over Bludhaven, but with Nightwing-Prime flying above, a confrontation waiting to happen.

Analysis

Chuck Dixon’s groundbreaking run on Nightwing is often remembered for the creation of Tad Ryerstad, Nite-Wing, a sociopathic vigilante whose confused attempts to imitate Nightwing cause endless trouble for Dick Grayson. It seems Dan Watters is interested in a similar thematic exploration with the character of Bryce Moran, a child gang member who has magically transformed into Nightwing-Prime from Krypton. The thematic possibilities are incredibly rich for such a doubling and foil figure, though Watters is definitely reaching into the more magical and deliberately metaphorical realms of DC than Dixon did.

Watters displays a lot of plot and character dexterity in Nightwing #129, wrapping up the Yanni/Nite-Mite disturbance through Babs’s wisdom and Nightwing’s heroic identity and role, as well as cementing future conflicts in a way that is loosely held and thus not a cliffhanger. After a few weaker issues in the middle of this arc, it’s nice to see a tighter, more efficient conclusion. The romance between Babs and Nightwing, with one slightly annoying note (where Babs refuses to acknowledge any help from Nightwing) is warmly portrayed, with Nightwing’s kiss at the end beautifully deployed. More romantic tension and catharsis than any of Taylor’s rather frustrating attempts to portray a mature romance between the two. Seeing Babs take such a major role in the unravelling of this problem gives me a lot of hope for how Watters can use her in the future of the run.

Dexter Soy’s art with Veronica Gandini’s colors remains as consistent and appealing as ever. In an age of constant art shifts even for major titles, it’s quite impressive that Soy and Watters have kept up such an impressive pace for their first year on the book. Here’s hoping for many more for them both!

The main cover by Dexter Soy shows Nightwing looking down while Nightwing-Prime floats above and behind him – showing one of the central connections of this issue nicely. Cover B by Jorge Fornes shows a Nightwing profile and symbol graffiti above a city sign showing Bludhaven directions, in keeping with Fornes’ strong design covers. Cover C features Juan Ferreyra’s Nightwing leaping down a moonlit alley, his escrima stick blasting towards the reader at lightning speed. Lastly, the 1 in 25 incentive variant by Serg Acuna shows Nightwing fighting all of the 5th Dimensional constructs from Nite-Mite’s world, a rare case of an incentive variant reflecting the interior!

Final Thoughts

After a few rough issues in this arc, Watters and Soy have wrapped it up in a nicely if unnecessarily quirky bow.

Comic Review: Detective Comics #1100

by Adam Koppel August 20, 2025
written by Adam Koppel

In this review of Detective Comics #1100, four all-new short stories celebrate the Dark Knight and his profound impact on the people of Gotham City. This issue proves that both a fateful plunge amidst concrete canyons, and a wordless tale of hope can both take your breath away.

This review has some spoilers

Detective Comics #1100 begins with the silent tale “Lost & Found” by current the ‘Tec creative team Tom Taylor and Mikel Janin, as a young deaf boy encounters Batman while posting flyers of his missing (stolen) dog, that Batman helps rescue (with a little canine assistance).

Taylor’s writing is all over the story, but there are no words needed in this thrilling and touching story as Janin’s art expertly hits every note from facial expressions, to body language, to background details and even ASL. Don’t worry, there are some cool action scenes too, although they aren’t needed to make this story especially memorable.

“Your Role in the Community” by the remarkable Mariko Tamaki and artist Amancay Nahuelpan jumps back and forth in time as an injured, (and tardy) Bruce Wayne attends a fundraising gala for local heroes (not Batman) and finds himself relentlessly prodded by an online journalist about what more he can do to help Gotham City.

Meanwhile, flashbacks detailing a brutal battle and subsequent motorcycle chase between Batman and the Joker across a rain-swept Gotham City lend subtext to Bruce’s night out.

In “The Knife and Gun Club”, legendary Batman scribe Greg Rucka, and artist Alvaro Martinez Bueno (The Nice House on the Lake) narrow their focus on a pair of nighttime emergency room doctors (presumably at Gotham General) during a rare quiet moment. The discussion turns to the new doctor’s concern over the growing number of patients with blunt force and laceration injuries (courtesy of Batman’s war on crime) as well as the fear of escalation.

The veteran physician explains that before Batman showed up on the scene the injuries sustained by patients were typically lethal (“the gun and knife club”), and while Batman’s methods were often harsh, both the victims and perpetrators often received a better outcome from his intervention. Bueno’s gorgeous art intersperses the important conversational scenes with the sporadic action-packed flashbacks to punctuate the story’s impact.

Finally, in “The Fall”, writer Dan Watters (Loki), and Bill Sienkiewicz (New Mutants), explore a story primarily from the Dark Knight’s point-of-view, and his observations, as he pursues a mass-murderer off of a tall building. As he hurtles earthward, Batman mentally assesses the variables in attempting to halt the killer’s plunge (before the sidewalk does).

Batman also remarkably works up a psychological profile and predictive behavioral algorithm of his quarry on the fly (literally). Sienkiewicz’s gritty art provides an array of dazzling (and dizzying) visuals that only enhance the tension.

Analysis

Although not quite the gala celebration of the 1000th installment (or even #1027), Detective Comics #1100 still provides a candid and compelling exploration of Batman’s connection to Gotham City, and the effect of his actions on its various citizens.

Whether with Batman’s inner monologue, or no dialogue at all, each story hits their mark. The stories paint a remarkable portrait of the Dark Knight from those who support him, tolerate him or fear him (although ironically there is precious little detective work found within these 48 pages).

Final Thoughts

Detective Comics #1100 celebrates another Dark Knight anniversary with a quartet of disparate, but equally affecting tales filled with suspense, drama, heart, humor and amazing art. Essential reading for any Batman fan.

DC Comics Releases Info On Batman/Static: Beyond

by Theodis Wright August 18, 2025
written by Theodis Wright

The new series, Batman/Static: Beyond, will be a part of the Elseworlds imprint with the first issue releasing in November

DC Comics announced a new limited series, Batman/Static: Beyond, a six-issue comic book story launching this fall under its DC Elseworlds imprint. The series will pair acclaimed writer Evan Narcisse with artist Nikolas Draper-Ivey. Batman/Static: Beyond #1 is set to launch on November 12, 2025.

This futuristic team-up unites two of DC’s most dynamic heroes: Terry McGinnis, the guardian of Neo-Gotham known to many as Batman (Beyond), and Virgil Hawkins, aka Static, the architect of Dakota City’s future. Both characters, renowned for being breakout animated stars, embark on a high-stakes mission that could reshape Earth’s place in the cosmos.

In Batman/Static: Beyond #1, Terry McGinnis patrols the streets of Neo-Gotham while Virgil Hawkins pioneers a technological revolution with the launch of the Q-Wave Energy Grid. As Earth prepares itself to join the Cooperative, an interplanetary partnership, the Justice League stands ready. But when a global blackout occurs, the planet’s future is at risk. It’s up to Static and Batman Beyond to become an unlikely duo to save the world before it’s too late.

Writer Evan Narcisse expressed his excitement about exploring the dynamic between the two heroes: “I loved the dynamic Nik set up between Static and Batman in the Milestone 30th Anniversary Special where these characters first teamed up with each other, and the most exciting part of this new project has been exploring how different Terry and Virgil are from each other.”

Enjoy this preview of the covers for Batman/Static: Beyond #1, courtesy of DC Comics:

Artist Nikolas Draper-Ivey added, “This story is intended to be a commentary on our overreliance on technology and the imminent dangers becoming complacent and too comfortable using AI to substitute our own imagination and human ingenuity.”

Draper-Ivey further emphasized, “we now use our watches to find our phones, we use our phones to connect to everything else. We don’t rely on our own memories. We rely on technology to remember for us. That deeply concerns me. I worry that we are getting to a point where if all these things were to be suddenly taken away from us in an instant—at the rate we’re going now, humanity will be at a huge disadvantage.”

This isn’t the first time the duo appeared together. Back in 2023, Draper-Ivey wrote and drew a story involving the two where the elder Bruce Wayne reached out to the grown Virgil Hawkins to give him a hand in calming his new, maverick Batman. The tone between Terry and Virgil that appeared in “Static Beyond” in 2023 will be present in Batman/Static: Beyond.

Narcisse further elaborated on the characters’ dynamics:

“Static is a former teen hero who grew up to take on even more responsibility for his city and the larger world, while Terry is still figuring out how to do those things in his own way. Terry’s still a high school student but he’s also got the weight of the Batman mantle and the expectations that come with it as key parts of his life now.

As an adult member of the Justice League, Virgil’s at a different part of his journey. But he’s driven by an adolescence where systemic injustice changed what it meant to live in his hometown of Dakota. Their approaches to making the world a safer, more just place are extremely different. That difference energizes the big question they have to deal with: can they learn to work together during a critical moment when everything they’ve taken for granted has fallen apart?”

Evan Narcisse

Batman/Static: Beyond #1 releases on November 12, 2025, and will feature a main cover by Draper-Ivey, retailing for $4.99 in the US. Variant cardstock covers will be available for $5.99 and are drawn by Dustin Nguyen, Rahzzah, and a 1:25 incentive variant by Denys Cowan and Ho Che Anderson. Nguyen’s cover will also be released as a foil variant. The series will run for six issues, with a collected edition scheduled for release on August 4, 2026.

Summary

Picking up where the story left off last time, Batman and Robin #24 opens with Robin helping the Gotham Irregulars back to the abandoned underground train station they started from. He directs them to a clinic to be treated, no questions asked, no cops. After agreeing to teach the kids how to do his ‘dope flippy-kick’, Robin returns to help Batman and Lautrec. On his way, he knows he still has to fight off the effects of Gravedigger’s Poppy, but he still sees a light in the red haze with a voice telling him to save Gotham’s royal family.

Deeper in the old city, Batman, tied up against a lamppost with an unconscious Lautrec, is surrounded by lifelike echoes of his parents’ murder in one of Memento’s vestiges. Katherine wakes up and Batman lets her know Robin will come for them, but that this is what Memento wants. The demon speaks to them, implying that the three of them knew each other in the past. Batman reveals that Memento isn’t Atticus Blye at all, but Officer Daniels of Scotland Yard. He had access to the Memento crime scene evidence and used it to frame professor Blye – and then disappeared off the face of the earth.

Daniels reveals that Memento really wanted to take Young Jack, Bruce, as Blye’s start pupil, but instead settled for Daniels when he stayed behind after Blye got the drop on Memento at the Power Station (in issue #14). Daniels drugged Blye until he lost his mind, then set him up with the stolen evidence. Daniels also reveals that Memento’s only motivation for torturing humans is his hate for them.

As Robin gets closer to the vestige, he realizes that all of the illusions he sees there are about the Wayne Murders and understands that Memento wants him to witness Batman and Lautrec being killed. Batman sees Robin fly in before the demon does, and manages to break free of his bonds by dislocating his thumb.  He is able to stop Memento from shooting him in the head and Robin flies in kicking the possessed man down a gorge. Both  fall but manage to get out, and before Memento can attack Batman, the plaster mask is shot off his face…by Blye surrounded by the souls of Memento’s victims. They have come for him. Blye apologizes to Daniels for failing him before shooting him as the souls rush in on him, taking the villain down the gorge to be consumed in the pits of hell (which looks like a tentacle monster).

Two nights later Batman and Lautrec debrief on a rooftop. Daniels’s body was found in Park Row, his death attributed to a fall from a great height. Batman suspects that the vestiges may be physically connected and if Blye and Daniels were able to access them, they could probably transport to anywhere the vestiges appeared. Batman further suggests that if Daniels was just a human using hallucinogens to torture and kill- then he’s dead now and the case is closed. If Memento was really a demon controlling Daniels, then the host is dead now and Memento has no one to possess – and the case is still closed.

Batman thanks Lautrec for helping him save Robin. She in turn also apologizes for being angry at him and tries to compliment the duo- but she finds herself alone on the roof top.

Batman and Robin #24 ends with Damian continuing his comic book of Robin and Batman. He is determined to be both a Wayne of Gotham, a position and inheritance he has chosen, and Robin son of Batman.

Review

So, PKJ’s first arc is over. I will say it got better over time. I was so frustrated and upset at first, but the story did grow on me over time. The issues where artist Juni Ba’s contributes, including this one, definitely help my enjoyment. I liked the introduction of the Gotham Irregulars, and I do hope they stick around for a while. I like Lautrec and her admiration for Robin and protectiveness of him, but also her ability to change her mind about Batman when she sees how much he loves his son.

Blye working behind the scenes to take down Memento was a nice touch, redeeming his character as someone who works for the good of people even when him mind is so addled. I appreciated the twist reveal of Daniels being the possessed victim.  I appreciated that it took both a physical weapon and a spiritual army to take down a demon possessing a human. Too often spiritual foes are taken down with physical weapons (which doesn’t make sense) or magic words (which in my opinion has no real spiritual power).

There was a great yet subtle scene when Damian was falling down the gorge and a Baterang attached to a chord catches him and stops him from falling. It was a great moment of Batman and Robin always having each other’s backs.

The Juni Ba comic at the end really ended the book on a high note for me. The way Damian portrays himself volunteering at the hospital was interesting: wearing a human mask and hiding his Robin costume underneath his lab coat. I loved that Robin has parts of Gotham that are just his, that Batman doesn’t know about. And the touch of Robin leaving a paper boat out for Batman to find, something he and Damian can do and bond over together, something Thomas and Bruce never could.

I am still not a fan of the way Batman was portrayed in this story, and honestly, he didn’t get much better in this issue. He is very passive, his only action being saving Robin from falling. He stopped being a dummy, though at the end he was still hesitant to believe Daniels was possessed by a demon. It’s very confusing since he went to Etrigan, a demon, to get info on Memento. Batman works with the supernatural all the time, and his hesitance the ENTIRE arc was baffling.

All in all, I like this, but I really hope PKJ does better with Batman going forward.

Batman: Dark Patterns #9 Comic Review

In this review of Batman: Dark Patterns #9, we get the finale of the arc in the Rookery as Batman finds himself trapped. But are things as it seems.

Batman: Dark Patterns #9 begins after Batman has been shot in the back by an old member of the Red Hood gang. The old man, along with his grandsons, plans on making a bigger statement to Gotham that the Red Hoods are officially back by killing Batman.

Batman, bleeding out and numb all over, starts to antagonize the old man that no one noticed the first body they dumped or the fire they started other than him and that no one really cares about the Red Hoods and that they are old news. The old man starts getting worked up before his grandsons put him back on his oxygen.

Batman finally calls the old man out that he was never in the Red Hood gang or an old soldier. Sam, the old man’s grandson, tells his grandfather that it’s ok and he doesnt care and that he’ll pour the bleach onto Batman to burn off his skin. The old man says no and that it’s his job to finish. As they tug on the bleach bucket, the old man drops his gun and a gun shot goes off and hits Sam in the chest. As he dies, the old man has a heart attack and dies. Batman thinks that if he wasn’t tied up, he could have saved them.

As Batman leaves, Sam’s brother is downstairs and says he heard a gunshot. Batman says that he is sorry and leaves.

As Batman: Dark Patterns #9 ends, Batman heads back to the cave and to Alfred and comments on how perhaps he never should have patrolled the Rookery and that all he brought was pain.

Analysis: Batman: Dark Patterns #9 was a pretty captivating issue. Fantastic all around. Batman tied up and numb and shot but he was still in control. If you were to tell me that one day I would read an issue where Batman was shot by an old guy and his grandkids and that he’s tied up the whole issue, I would have said what happened to Batman and why is he lame now? Well he wasn’t lame. He was in control the whole issue. He can’t move but he is picking apart this old man psychologically.

As compelling as the issue was, it was pretty heartbreaking. A sad old man with only his grandkids. He would hype up himself to impress his grandsons and it led to his death, Sam’s death, and another child left without family. Great writing by Watters to write such a compelling issue.

Can’t forget about the heart by Sherman. Great, unique layouts that you do not really see in main titles nowadays. More artists should experiment with panel layouts like this. There was a scene where Batman talks about what bleach does to a person’s skin and as he narrates it, his skin is bubbling and peeling off. Could work in a horror comic and not something you expect to see in a Batman one.

All in all, Batman: Dark Patterns #9 was a great Batman comic. The end of this arc. Excited to see what Watters does next.

Score: 5 out of 5

The Story

Poison Ivy #35 directly follows up Ivy’s confrontation with the Gotham City Police Department in Marshview at the end of the last issue.  Janet from HR feels conflicted as she secretly revealed their location to the GCPD, but they took Killer Croc rather than Ivy as agreed upon.

Meanwhile, Ivy speaks to Wendy Richardson, a woman who survived a labia spore infection that left her deformed. Richardson explains how she was at a wellness retreat with Ivy where everyone was infected with labia spores. Ivy created a vaccine antidote which Richardson refused to take. Her survival means that Ivy must come to terms with the fact that the virus is still out there, and that she wasn’t able to completely eradicate it like she believed.

Ivy puts Janet to bed and goes to Gotham City to visit Harley Quinn. She asks her advice on how to deal with Bella Garten and the Order of the Green Knight, but Quinn tells her she should just talk to Garten directly. So Peter Undine, Wendy Richardson, and Ivy all go to Seattle to see her. Ivy apologizes for her initial rejection of the Order of the Green Knight and indicates that she is now ready to lead it.

Garten rejects Ivy’s offer, and says the Order will have to choose between following her or following Ivy. Immediately, a fight breaks out amongst the followers which Ivy has to break up. Finally, she confronts Garten in the rain and takes her hands in her own. She alters her microbes to infect her with a biotoxin that will make her poisonous to everything she touches. To a botanist like Garten, this is a fate worse than death.

Analysis

Poison Ivy #35 makes another detour from the Janet from HR, Parliament of Trees storyline to bring back Bella Garten and Wendy Richardson. There are positives and negatives to having a single writer at the help of a book that runs for several years. The positives are tonal consistently, singular vision and voice, and a strong sense of continuity. The downsides are that you are stuck with a singular iteration of a character, thematic repetition, and in the case of Poison Ivy, and seemingly ever growing number of plot threads, loose ends, and overlapping character motivations.

We seem to be at the point of the run where G. Willow Wilson has a handful of open threads that she can just shuffle around at her leisure, depending on what kind of story she wants to tell each week. She seems less concerned about wrapping up individual storyarcs definitively, as she can always return to them later down the line. The problem with this is that it kills the momentum of any one story.

Poison Ivy #35 sees the return of Wendy Richardson and the labia spores storyline that hasn’t been touched upon in over a year of issues. With such a huge delta in when it was last explored, it’s difficult to muster much enthusiasm for it. Wilson brings these elements back to explore a very transparent vaccine-mandate dialectic: should people be required to take a vaccine if not doing so will endanger the life of others. There’s no real subtlety or insight into this issue, it’s just stated bluntly for the reader to accept.

We then return to the Bella Garten and Order of the Green Knight storyline that was abandoned several issues ago only to return at the end of last issue. Garten remains a pretty flat and uninspired character who seems to only serve to provide conflict with Ivy, and the Order itself is stripped of any agency whatsoever. Their only purpose is to convey a heavy-handed “look at how quickly we turn against ourselves” political allegory.

I don’t have much in the way of specific criticisms since there isn’t much in the way of a single story, but I will give one. The reason Ivy gives for Harley not living with her is: “I couldn’t live with myself if she got hurt.” This is the same person who carries a giant hammer, kills people, and dated The Joker. That excuse might work for Spider-Man talking about Mary Jane, but it doesn’t for Harley.

Marcio Takara’s art and Arif Prianto’s colors are the highpoint as always. This is far from the flashiest issue but even on an off issue, Takara is cooking with heat. This series remains full of visual splendor, every page looks great and shoutout to the freaky looking effect they give to Bella Garten after she is infected. The other undervalued MVP of this series is Hassan Otsamne-Elhaou whose lettering remains creative and personalized to the characters.

Final Thoughts

The biggest problem I have with Poison Ivy #35 is that it’s not really a story. Instead it’s a series of story fragments from a variety of past half-baked concepts and ideas from this run. The art is terrific but that’s about all.
