Birds of Prey #24 begins as Big Barda, covered by the villain Inque who controls her actions, fights the combined Birds of Prey (Grace Choi, Harley Quinn, Vixen, Onyx, and more) in the Shadow Army base, Canary makes her move to free Barda from Inque. First Canary Crying most of the Shadow Army into temporary helplessness, she makes an opening for Constantine to cast a spell, then Batgirl (Cassandra Cain) gives Barda her Mega-Rod, which frees her. The Shadow Army flees or stands in fear as the Birds recover from the Barda-beating. Sin/Maegara manifests a huge green magic tentacle spell around Barda, indicating that Golden Lion is controlling her. Barda finds Golden Lion and throws him to the ground, but he grabs the Mega-Rod from Sin’s tentacles, forms a boom tube, and the Shadow Army escapes. Thankfully, Sin grabs the Mega-Rod back before the tube closes.

After searching the base, the Birds have a massive feast in Gotham. Barbara and Cass ruminate on how the Shadow Army planned for everything, even defeat, making their victory feel like a loss. After the feast, Babs starts to lay out a campaign against the Shadow Army, but Barda bursts through a wall and drags out Inque!

Analysis

Birds of Prey #24‘s conclusion to the “On the Run” story is a bit of a reset – the Bird’s only new element is they know the Shadow Army exists. Most of the energy of the plot was around Barda being captured and then freed. No information about the Shadow Army’s motivations or even their leader’s identity were learned – not even by the audience, really. However, since this is obviously the first arc in a long term plan, such shenanigans are to be expected from an action adventure book like Birds of Prey! The focus on teamwork against the foe, the quippiness during the action, and the time focused on team-building in the feast and relationship building interactions also is quite well done.

All these solid writing elements by Thompson are doubly highlighted by Sami Basri’s excellent pencils, ably assisted on most pages by Vincent Cifuentes. Basri, despite getting a big boost in popularity from working on the Harley Quinn title, doesn’t let Harley hog too much of the spotlight, even though his little action bit of Harley bopping a possessed Barda on the head with her bat futile-y was pretty hilarious. Basri remains an inspired choice for the book because of how appealing and clean lined his work is, and how clear the action is, two solid traits for a book relying on action adventure and characters the readers love. Hopefully he stays on as main artist for some time!

Annie Wu’s main cover features Black Canary (perhaps unsurprisingly! Given Wu’s brilliant work on Dinah’s last solo series in 2015) leading the Birds in jumping off a building – very dynamic and cool, though a bit less stylish than some of her recent covers for the series. Nimit Malavia’s variant features a large Barbara Gordon wearing her sweater and vest Oracle combo, surrounded by smaller Birds in action!

KyuYongEom’s variant features Black Canary on a rooftop in an odd bent over post above a cute yellow canary bird, stylishly painted in digital. Bruno Redondo features a cover with Black Canary in a boxing gym, sitting behind a punching bag resting – very lovely lighting – part of the Bruno Redondo artist spotlight series this month! Rian Gonzales’s 1 in 25 incentive variant features the Sin paper doll setup, with plenty of chibi decorations.

Comic Book Review: Poison Ivy #34

by Gareth Turner August 3, 2025
written by Gareth Turner

In this review of Poison Ivy #34, Poison Ivy faces off against the GCPD while Janet tries to get help from several of Ivy’s old friends and acquaintances.

Poison Ivy #34
Writer: G. Willow Wilson
Artist: Marcio Takara
Main Cover: Jessica Fong
Variant Covers: Joshua “Sawy” Swaby, Tran Nguyen, and Helen Mask
Release Date: June 4, 2025

This comic book review contains spoilers

The Story

Following the events of last issue, Poison Ivy #34 opens after Janet from HR has sold Ivy out. She is attacked by GCPD troops and helicopters. Overcome with guilt, Janet joins Peter Undine to search for help. When they get separated in the woods, Janet asks Marshview to take her to Gotham City. In Gotham, she teams up with Killer Croc, while in Seattle Undine teams up with several members of Bella Garten’s Order of the Green Knight including Wendy and Sprout. They battle the GCPD and free Ivy but the PD captures Killer Croc as the Order holds back a screaming Janet.

Analysis

Another month, another issue of G. Willow Wilson slowly trucking forward with this Janet-from-HR betrayal storyline. Janet repeats her concerns that Ivy only uses her when it’s convenient but that’s about as deep as it goes before she makes a complete character reversal. I think the real fun to be had in this issue, if you can call it that, is seeing the return of characters like Croc and Bella Garten although they’re given very little to do beyond brief cameos. Overall, this feels like a filler-issue leading up to a big action climax for this arc. The awesomely designed Bog Venus and Xylon are sadly absent from this issue.

Ivy’s philosophical pontification has begun to wear thin on me. She discusses how humanity is always determined to wipe out those that are weaker and different from them. Then she admits that she has held the same ideas in the past. It feels like Wilson is attempting to explore her own philosophical ideas which frequently contradict what we understand about Ivy’s character. And her constant attempts to reconcile this contradiction read as clunky and discordant. Another odd beat is when Bella Garten accuses Undine of splitting up the Order of the Green Knight in order to profit from this division. I’m not entirely sure how she came to this conclusion beyond having a general disdain towards Undine for past actions. But is there anything in this situation to suggest he’s profiting from helping Ivy?

I genuinely think this series will be remembered because of Marcio Takara’s art. I’ve gone on and on about how much I love it, I don’t think I’ve ever had a single critique of the visuals when he’s drawing. He can do it all, the action is dynamic and exciting, the characters are lush and relatable, the landscapes are stunning, etc. The page where Undine disappears into the blackness of the forest, or the panel that uses a tree silhouette to split between Seattle and Gotham are visual feasts. Arif Prianto paints some beautifully colored sunsets and gives Janet a frazzled-red eyed appearance. And as mentioned earlier, the use of deep blacks, whether it’s to convey isolation in a dense forrest, or just to set Bella Garten apart from the Order, is top notch. It’s all great stuff.

Shoutout to Hassan Otsamne-Elhaou who continues to make creative choices with the lettering, specifically with Wendy’s dialogue alternated between black and purple to emphasize her dual nature. Also the chaotic panel layout in the issue’s opening pages is fantastic and sure to grab readers attention right from the get go.

Final Thoughts

Poison Ivy #34 serves up another confusing and largely unsatisfying story, bolstered by some of the best art in all of comics.

Batgirl #10 kicks off as Norbu the Untested has descended on Dragon Ranch in search of the child of Lady Shiva. Before last issue that was understood to be Batgirl – Cassandra Cain. However Tenji Turner a.k.a. Jade Tiger claims to be Shiva’s son as well. He hurls himself into combat but is woefully unseasoned as a warrior, taking a sword-slash up his chest. Bronze Tiger intervenes to knock Norbu into his shed, before he and Batgirl rush off to save Tenji from bleeding to death.

Cassandra is confused and angry. She doesn’t understand why Shiva kept Tenji from her, and why Bronze Tiger wasn’t upfront with her either. Tiger claims that he didn’t want his child of Shiva to end up like Cassandra, always surrounded by violence. Tenji recovers from his injury, saying that Shiva would visit him on his birthday every year, testing his skills each time. Now that she’s gone, he’s going to use everything he’s learned to avenge her death. He swears to fight by Cassandra’s side, and the two make peace for the time being, just as Norbu returns to the fray. Already uneasy against Batgirl, he’s quickly overwhelmed by the two children of Shiva, going down in five moves. Furious and ready to unleash his ultimate finishing move, Norbu is quickly beheaded from behind by another assassin as Batgirl #10 comes to an end. Wu Bing of the Blood Clan has arrived.

Analysis

I’m still annoyed by the last issue, and am second guessing Brombal’s play for this arc. Batgirl #10 read slightly better, but there are still recurring cliche’s that I could do without, mainly people vomiting emotional exposition through bursts of violence. Last issue Cassandra just whaled on Bronze Tiger in a fit of rage, which didn’t feel right but I tried to accept considering the emotional journey she’d went through with Shiva. In Batgirl #10, Tiger destroys his wooden dummy, screaming that he didn’t want Tenji to turn into Cass or Shiva. I don’t buy that.

Someone as serene and experienced as Ben Turner should be able to express himself simply without acting like the other two teenagers in the room. I also don’t see why he couldn’t say “I didn’t want my son to become a killer like his family” without breaking something. But this kind of histrionic character writing speaks to the weakness in this run that’s been a poison pill for months now, and it’s wearing me down when it comes time to read the next issue. These are all overly emotional characters, but their emotions don’t register as anything other than wan, feeble attempts to drive conflict without feeling any truer than someone stubbing their toe and yelling about it for the rest of the day.

I think the larger issue is that the story is way too focused on a broad view of family and legacy and guilt and other concepts and themes that feel more and more abstract as new information is delivered. Cassandra is in flux with her feelings about her mother, but we haven’t been able to sit with her and see how that’s been messing her up for a long time. Just a single moment of her stopping and reflecting on what’s taking place would be nice, but the plot keeps moving and getting crowded with character after character. She’s mad at herself, mad at Shiva, mad at Ben Turner and mad at Tenji. That’s all logical, but it’s not being expressed in any way that’s interesting, or says anything about her character other than the fact that she’s the main hero and this hero is currently angry.

How else could this be better presented? Maybe by taking Norbu down immediately and engaging less with this Unburied nonsense which I’m (all to eager to be done with as well). She says she could defeat Norbu in five moves, but with her skill level and abilities, it’d be easy to writer he beating him in one.

Another nitpick is that for a character trained by Shiva and Richard Dragon, Tenji doesn’t seem to display any talent in reading people’s body language. Memorizing moves speaks to the complete opposite of the skill level of their masters. Was that intentional? Possibly, but he should still be an incredibly gifted fighter, right? Granted, he is fighting someone who Shiva and Batgirl have had a tough time with, so he’s stuck on a tougher difficulty level of opponents. Still, it’s another thing I’ve had trouble with, the presentation of these fighter’s skills. These are meant to be DC Comics’ very best fighters, and with almost every issue it’s just been struggle-fight after struggle-fight.

What I did like this month was some of Cass’ attitude. Her determination and confidence in taking on Norbu was cool, and I like that we’ve gone two issues in a row with her mask on. It’s almost like she’s hiding from herself.

I’m also wondering if Tenji is biologically Shiva’s son, or if there’s going to be a switch-a-roo with Carolyn. After all, Carolyn and Ben were the item. That would make somewhat more sense, and it’d be a welcome surprise.

Final Thoughts

I’m toughing out this arc, and hoping that we’ll be done with this road trip by the year’s end. I’m eager to see Brombal’s take on Cassandra in Gotham and her interacting with her real family again. Miyazaki’s artwork is still solid, but much of the emotional beats have me rolling my eyes. I really hope there’s not another violent outburst in next month’s issue…

Comic Review: Nightwing 2025 Annual #1

In this review of the Nightwing 2025 Annual #1, Commissioner Maggie Sawyer investigates Olivia Pearce, head of Spheric Solutions, and what she finds is a meta-fictional trip!

This review contains spoilers

The Nightwing 2025 Annual #1 begins long ago, a frothing at the mouth lawyer screams at a jury about the evils of comic books, waving a Gray Ghost and Wonder Boy comic as a distressed blonde girl watches from the audience.

In Bludhaven now, Commissioner Maggie Sawyer walks past the fifth-dimensional-body-horror Titans Tower, asking the CEO of Spheric Solutions, Olivia Pearce, what the situation is. Searching Olivia’s face for the horror that Dick Grayson’s sister, the Mayor of Bludhaven, saw, Maggie vows to find more. By phone, she learns all of Olivia’s current paperwork is false.

Meanwhile, Olivia watches Titans Tower, and talks to her dark, demonic clown ally, the Zanni, working for the Cirque du Sin. She remembers meeting Zanni leaping out of an old Gray Ghost comic as a child.

At Arkham Tower, Maggie meets Dr. Chase Meridian, who guides her to a man called Ringmaster, the only survivor of the Cirque du Sin who wasn’t murdered on A-Day (at the beginning of the Infinite Frontier initiative). He remembers being kidnapped by an extremely young Olivia, called Columbina, because he was the writer of the Gray Ghost comic. She tells him of the dark god of the carnival and chaos and story who hates superheroes because they are the destructive energy of the circus sanitized for the forces of order. The writer refuses in terror, but the Zanni thrusts his fingers in the writer’s brain to create a leader for his evil purposes.

While we, the audience, see this backstory, Maggie only hears rantings about the Zanni and the girl.

Another flashback shows the writer, named Lloyd Caroll, meeting Olivia for the first time as a girl in a comic shop, who tells him she wishes he would let the villains win.

Maggie visits the same comic shop, and learns about Lloyd Carroll from the clerk.

Oliva and Zanni dance in the Spheric Solutions skyscraper, monologuing about their plan to turn Bludhaven into a death trap to create endless fear.

Flashback shows young Olivia coming home with her Gray Ghost comic, and her father, the lunatic lawyer from the first scene, beats her for disobeying his hatred of comic books, and as he tries to shove her into the basement for punishment, she kills him by pushing him down the stairs instead.

Reading old Gray Ghost comics, Maggie discovers fan letters from Olivia Hillman, digs more and finds her lawyer father who got the comic book code passed. She vows to protect Bludhaven from Olivia’s death traps.

Analysis

Dan Watters teams up with Francisco Francavilla again for another Maggie Sawyer focused story in the Nightwing 2025 Annual #1. However, instead of a noir-focused police procedural story, Watters spins a deeply meta-fictional story about the history, meaning, and power of comic books. Drawing from the real history of the comics code, observations about superhero comics by Alan Moore and others, and his own love of the supernatural horror genre, he spins an intriguing but ultimately deeply frustrating tale about the villains vs. the lonely detective in Bludhaven.

Francavilla’s art – colored by himself as well – tells the story brilliantly, shading old timey golden/silver/bronze age comic book adventure storytelling into creepy horror beautifully. The Zanni is a bit scarier when Dexter Soy draws him, but he’s plenty horrifying here. The shifting timescale, clever tricks like highlighting Olivia in a crowd by giving her slightly more vivid color – it’s an artistic treat. The only bit that doesn’t quite work is the use of old four panel comic suspense montages. While fun, it’s also a bit filler-y and used a few too many times – the kind of thing thrown in when you have an Annual with a bigger page count, but not QUITE enough story pages to quite fill the requirements.

The frustrations comes when you examine Watters’ argument – emotional and intellectual. In addition to yet again falling into the cheap, lazy tool of having the villain who holds the wrong beliefs (Olivia’s father) also be a ridiculously over the top child abuser (last deployed by Watters in his other collaboration with Francavilla on this run), the arguments here fall into a trap also accidentally sprung by writers as gifted as Sir Terry Pratchett. In his Witches series, Pratchett railed against the ignorant colonial era peasants who feared and persecuted witches, which we modern people all know don’t exist. Except he ALSO writes witches as having enormous supernatural powers and doing things that are quite dangerous and frightening – always for the greater good, because Pratchett wants to make the witches his heroines – but it’s a serious incoherence. You can’t say people are stupid for hating something that doesn’t exist, then write a story where actually they do exist and expect that to make sense. Similarly, Watters acts like only horrifically, cartoonishly (pun intended) evil and abusive people supported the comics code, but also that pre-code comics could summon demons that lead to a girl killing her father and becoming a CEO obsessed with terrorizing people with death traps.

There’s a lot of clever, interesting ideas in this comic – like how the Gray Ghost writer is worried that Olivia doesn’t understand what he’s trying to say with his comic books – but it’s overshadowed by the central incoherence of the argumentation.

Francesco Francavilla’s cover for this annual is the only one – surprising! It’s quite clever, using lots of design elements to get the credits across, really showcasing that it’s a Maggie Sawyer story.

Let me know what you think on twitter @ibmmiller, or join the conversation in our Discord!

Final Thoughts

The intellectual incoherence of the Nightwing 2025 Annual #1’s argument and moral point bog down the generally solid craftsmanship heavily. 2 out of 5 Batarangs.

But when Gotham headlines about a new series of grisly crime scenes lead to speculation that her nemesis is somehow escaping Arkham to continue his murder spree, she feels compelled to return. Jonathan Crane, former classmate and current head of Arkham Asylum, assures her that The Joker is securely locked in his cell…yet the women of Gotham are still being stalked by a killer who is using their corpses to make art.

Unwilling to return to the police precinct and its regulations, Harley forms an alliance with some unlikely conspirators, and these women work to save the people of Gotham City.

Batman #161 Comic Book Review

In this review of Batman #161, Batman faces off against old enemies and partners (again).

Release Date: July 23, 2025

This comic book review contains spoilers

Batman #161 opens with Batman freeing Damian from Hush’s grip using sonar to attract a swarm of bats, ala Batman: Year One. Hush escapes with his goons and Batman punches out Bane and instructs Damian to return him to Blackgate Penitentiary. Batman then comes across an abandoned warehouse with a Gotham City game board and all his friends and family as little cardboard pieces.

Meanwhile, at the Gotham lighthouse, Joker tries to shoot Nightwing and Red Hood but they dive into the harbor. Batman spies on Batgirl as she visits her father in the hospital. Jim Gordon tells her that if Batman saved Joker’s life then he had a good reason to do it. Then Hush detonates an explosion where Batman is perched and Batgirl catches him. She fights him and confronts him about continuing to save Joker’s life. The fight is then broken up by the group of Nightwing, Huntress, Robin, Catwoman and the Riddler.

Analysis

Jeph Loeb and Jim Lee’s long awaited return collaboration continues to be a tremendous disappointment. I’ll start with the writing even though there’s really very little to say beyond that. Every issue so far, and especially Batman #161, has been made up of a series of clunky action set pieces strung together with little to no substance in between. Beyond the introduction of Damian, Jason, Barbara’s return as Batgirl, and Alfred’s death, there is no acknowledgement given to the decades of stories written between the last Jeph Loeb Hush and this one. Batman’s internal monologue gives us bullet points of the most consequential moments of post-crisis Batman, and throws out all the other context that I’m sure Loeb is unfamiliar with.

The character motivations, such that they exist at all, are bizarre. We’re kind of getting a Bat-family vs Batman story and the crux of their beef seems to be that Batman tried to save Joker’s life. The Batman-Joker fixation is one of the most grating aspects of modern comics which really skyrocketed to popularity during Judd Winnick’s run and DC hasn’t been able to let go of since. There’s really no new spin put on it here other than that Hush seems to be orchestrating the conflict somehow and the Bat-family suddenly feels like Joker’s life was saved one time too many so every one of them’s default plan is to literally try and fight him. Nevermind that not a single one of them would stand a chance and they know that.

It’s so lazy, it’s so half-baked and boring that it barely feels thought out at all. The tired and convoluted plot is occasionally interrupted with a few panels such as the board game scene to remind us this is still a Hush mystery. I’m not even sure what the mystery is at this point, just what is Hush planning? I’m sure Loeb is doing one of his ‘what you think is the mystery ISN’T the real mystery’ things he loves to do but I don’t even know what the mystery is supposed to be.

Jim Lee is also not putting forth his best work here. There are some closeups of Batman that look good, but his staging and blocking for the actions is stiff and flat. Bane’s design is shockingly boring and he just stands in the background and does nothing. I find the coloring and general layout to be garish and uninteresting. Other than the one flashback page, I see nothing to recommend this book on visually either.

Final Thoughts

Hush 2 does not hold a candle to the original visually or narratively. It’s safe to say this has been a disappointment.

The doctor says that Bruce will be out for another 48 hours. Just then, Bruce wakes up.

Bruce pulls a lock pick from his mouth and escapes his room. A naked Bruce begins walking around the facility where he is being held. Bruce makes his way to a K.L.A.Y. center. There Bruce steps onto what looks like the floor of a clay man. Bane then sees Bruce and knocks him out again.

Cut to flashback of Bruce and Waylon training for his big fight with Bibbo. Then the next scene states that it is July as Martha is seeing Harvey because Bruce has been missing for over a month. The doctor’s log is commenting on how Bruce seems to have given up and has even stopped eating so they had to put a feeding tube in his stomach. The staff believes him to be fully broken. Just as doctors come in to move him, Bruce fights back and kicks ass. Bruce took out some teeth to create some brass knuckles. He has also fashioned his feeding tube to shoot stomach acid (gross) and has used his bowel movements and urine to create a flammable substance to explode the wall in his cell (grossest). This time Bruce makes it to the Isley Ecosystem before being caught by Bane again.

Another flashback shows Selina asking Bruce to come along to rob a museum but he is watching a film on Bibbo for Waylon. Selina tells Bruce that he has to tell Waylon that he doesn’t stand a chance against Bibbo but he can’t.

Martha is putting up posters in hopes anyone can provide information on Bruce. It is day 91 and Bruce has woken up and his body is scarred from multiple surgeries and his head shaved. The Doctor and her log says that staff believe Bruce to be fully broken but decides on one more test. Showing him his Bat suit. Bruce suits up and makes one last run for it before running into a group of man/animal hybrids known as the Langstrom experiments. Just then as Bane is about to take him in, a giant lizard/croc shows up and takes out Bane. Batman recognizes that the croc is Waylon. He hopes on his back and they ride off together.

As Absolute Batman #10 comes to an end, the doctor behind the log reveals herself as Dr Arkham and she gives Bane the go ahead to break Batman.

Analysis: A lot to unpack here. The Dragotta art is still strong. Even though this seems to have become a borderline cartoonish world with the size of certain people and animals. I guess I should expect everything to be bigger and better in this Snyder/Dragotta world. I did not expect things to get gross. The stomach acid and poop bomb (best name I could come up with) was a bit too much to read in a Batman comic. I know it’s the Absolute world but it’s something I’d rather not have to think about Batman doing. I know he is one of the world’s greatest escape artists but still. Let’s do better.

It is also unclear what Dr Arkham and Bane want with Bruce. What type of surgery did they perform on him? He has green surgical lines all over his body. Did they pump him full of Venom? Is he going to grow 42 feet tall like Bane? Or did Langstrom experiment on him and is going to turn into Man-Bat? It is also unclear if Waylon can talk. He clearly recognized Bruce because they rode off together. Can he change back? It is also going to be a massive stretch to call him “Killer Croc” because he is the size of a dinosaur from Jurassic Park. He looks like Doc Connors Lizard. There is nothing particularly Croc about him.

This arc has been off for me. I liked the previous arcs by Scott Snyder here but it seems to be that arc is based on “lets just make everything bigger and crazier”. There’s poop, giant lizards, creepy clay men, small head Bane, and Bruce is missing teeth. There is no way that Bruce is just going to be normal after this. I think it would be interesting for Snyder to explore some post traumatic stress with Bruce. But I feel like it might get ignored or hand waved away because its cool. I hope I’m wrong.

The most interesting things to me remain the Selina flashbacks and Bruce with the boys. Snyder has those relationships and character interactions on point. Selina has been teased more and more throughout the issues and I assume that we are going to meet her in the present at some point. Perhaps she is going to help Batman and the big green croc/lizard.
