Comic Review: Detective Comics #1098

by Adam Koppel June 21, 2025
written by Adam Koppel

In this review of Detective Comics #1098, Batman’s overseas mission to save Harvey Bullock gets complicated after he is forced to rescue The Penguin.

This review contains spoilers

Detective Comics #1098 picks up with Batman in the country of Pokolistan (see: Creature Commandos animated series) looking to rescue Harvey Bullock from the mysterious group called Elixir, but comes face-to-face with Oswald Cobblepot instead. Batman grudgingly allows Oswald to accompany him (rather than possibly being eaten by wolves), but demands that there be no killing. The pair steal one of Elixir’s military-style vehicles and hit the road.

During the long drive, Oracle remotely briefs Batman about Elixir’s top operatives (who appear to be over a century  old), and their apparent connection to the Dark Knight’s long-lived nemesis Ras Al Ghul. Batman and Oswald discover Harvey’s location after tracking a second Elixir vehicle to a remote gated compound with Oracle’s help of course, (doesn’t she ever sleep?)

At the compound, Elixir tortures Harvey, demanding that he tell them who else knows their secret. Harvey won’t spill, but he does warn them that he’s going to enjoy their eventual comeuppance. As if in reply, the Elixir vehicle Batman stole suddenly breaches the gates, and is taken out by Elixir’s guards. The distraction gives Batman and Oswald time to infiltrate the compound unnoticed. The pair pummel their way through a series of guards, and spot Harvey on a security monitor.

Harvey tricks a guard into getting too close and head butts him, which gives Harvey a measure of satisfaction (but he’s still tied up). Batman and Oswald arrive moments later, and the Dark Knight frees Harvey. The former detective arms himself, and Oswald does the same, but Batman switches it out for an umbrella.

From outside, Elixir orders their surrender, but Harvey has other ideas. He picks up the injured guard, using him as a human shield, figuring the guards won’t take out one of their own, (bad move, you don’t become that long lived without a willingness to sacrifice some pawns along the way).

Detective Comics #1098 ends with Harvey and his prisoner being caught in a hail of gunfire.

Analysis

Detective Comics #1098 is a breezy, well-paced issue. Writer Tom Taylor and guest artist Lee Garbett unfold the secret history of Elixir within a few well-crafted panels, (including the not at all surprising reveal that Ras Al Ghul was a past acquaintance). Batman and Oswald’s “Hope and Crosby” road trip banter adds some welcome humor, as the familiar adversaries spend some quality time trying to get under each other’s skin.

Harvey Bullock’s torture sequence, (and his eventual escape) is filled with violence (including that final page), but the blood and gore are thankfully kept to a minimum, leaving the reader to fill in the blanks (I blame Scott McCloud). No question that Harvey using the guard as a human shield was a bluff (that Elixir called). How Taylor has worked out what happens next is unknown, but very little likelihood that Harvey will bite it.

On a lighter note, it’s nice to see Barbara Gordon as Oracle sharing her workstation with rescue dog Haley from Taylor’s Nightwing run.

Artist Lee Garbett fills Batman’s sequences with an impressive use of heavy shadow, mixing in some tight action sequences across Detective Comics #1098. Harvey Bullock’s scenes with Elixir are brighter, but bathed in a sickly yellow. Even when Batman joins Harvey, he is still cloaked in heavy shadow. Garbett’s style is more minimalist than series artist Mikal Janin, but it still gets the job done.

Final Thoughts

Detective Comics #1098 is a breezy, mostly predictable issue with solid art and some clever one-liners, moving the story along while adding in a dash of tension and a “surprise” cliffhanger.

DC Comics Announces New Red Hood Series

by Theodis Wright June 18, 2025
written by Theodis Wright

DC today announced a new ongoing DC All In comic book series, Red Hood, by Gretchen Felker-Martin and Jeff Spokes, on sale September 10, 2025. The new Red Hood series, while in continuity, will be for mature audiences only.

DC Comics announced Red Hood, a new ongoing comic book series from writer Gretchen Felker-Martin and artist Jeff Spokes with lettering by Becca Carey. The new Red Hood series releases to comic book shops everywhere on September 10, 2025. The new DC All In series brings Jason Todd back to the streets, but not in Gotham City isn’t the city he’s protecting—Jason Todd has left Batman behind. All he’s taking with him to New Angelique is his costume, his bike, a determined sense of justice, and a metal briefcase containing two handguns (and lots of bullets).

This isn’t your typical Gotham City, cape-and-cowl story. Rated for mature readers (17+), the new Red Hood series dives headfirst into the dirty, dangerous new city of New Angelique, where crime is the air people breathe and justice is… complicated. Jason has nothing but his helmet, his bike, a couple of guns, and a truckload of issues.

“Sweat, blood, and powder burns. Broken bones and mind control. A city rotted from the inside out,” said Felker-Martin said in the press release. “Jason’s going through hell on the hunt for an enigmatic telepath, and he’s taking us with him. I’m thrilled to be helming this new run of Red Hood with Jeff Spokes.”

Jeff Spokes added, “Red Hood is gritty, bloody, sexy and stripped down. Gretchen’s writing is a well-crafted blend of superheroes and pulp noir, all with a New Orleans flavored backdrop.”

“Red Hood is the in-continuity story Jason Todd fans have been waiting for. It delivers high-stakes action, a gripping mystery, and raw, unapologetic storytelling.

Every element of the book highlights the core aspects of Jason’s character—his difficulties with personal connections, his badass training, his brooding hotness, and his violent approach to heroism. Which means he’ll be killing people—a lot. Let me repeat myself: this is the story Jason Todd fans have been waiting for.”

Arianna Turturro, DC Comics editor

The story kicks off when Jason stumbles across a super-powered serial killer taking out cops. As he digs deeper, he uncovers a web of corruption that’s way bigger than he bargained for. But Jason isn’t the only vigilante in town. In fact, he isn’t the only member of the Bat Family in New Angelique. Helena Bertinelli (aka Huntress) is on Jason’s trail. But is she there to stop him, or to join his fight?

Turturro hints that the dynamic between Jason and Helena could get messy—in the best way:

“They’re both damaged, dangerous, and deeply human,” Turturro said in the press release. “Together, they might bring out the worst in each other—and that’s exactly what makes it so compelling.”

TBU Review: Absolute Batman #9

by BJ Shea June 16, 2025
written by BJ Shea

In this review of Absolute Batman #9, Batman’s search for Waylon takes him to the underbelly of Ark-M. What he finds is more than he expected.

Absolute Batman #9 opens with the leaders of Quarc and Kahndaq coming to peace talks and ending a bitter rivalry and war between the two nations. Suddenly, Absolute Bane shows up and forces one of them to break the treaty already which Omar does (although it’s unclear which country he leads) while Bane smushes the head of the other leader. Bane tells Omar that the peace talks broke down and he will double the efforts in their war because that is what his employers expect. Then Bane gets a call to head to Gotham City. And that is where our next arc begins.

Meanwhile, with Waylon missing, Batman has been on a war on the streets. He is beating up so many hoods that the city has run out of ambulances and has had to resort to using rideshares. They ran out of rideshares and one EMT is bringing a hurt criminal on a bicycle and his name tag says “Grayson, D.”

Batman turns to Barbara Gordon for help to find Waylon. She gives him information that says the police took Waylon for breaking city curfew to Ark M. Bruce, along with Eddie, Pennyworth, Harvey, and Oz, are putting a plan together to bust Waylon out.

Jim and Martha are watching the news as Mayor Hill and Harvey Bullock continue their fear state and Jim comments on how it is time for Martha to step into the light to save Gotham politically.

We see a flashback of Bruce in bed with Selina with a pile of money as Waylon shows up to say he is going to box Bibbo Bibbowski (love it) for the championship. He asks Bruce to be his trainer and because they are best friends, Bruce agrees.

Bruce begins his break into Ark M with Alfred guiding him like old times in the main universe. Batman makes his way but the coms drop out and Batman comes face to face with Bane. Bane kicks the holy hell out of Batman and then uses the venom. The venom puffs up Bane to look like the worst version of every 90s image character ever. He grabs Batman by the head and says it’s time to get Batman prepped for surgery.

Analysis: Ooof. I like the Waylon/Bruce/Selina flashback in this issue. I like the start of the issue with Bane. I liked the Dick Grayson tease. I sorta liked Batman and Alfred and the others planning the break in. I liked Batman quickly meeting his match with Bane. But I did not like the suped up Venom Bane. Wow. Not even 90s Image Comics would take that character. They would think he is too big.

Without Venom, Absolute Bane is a big, jacked guy with a small looking head. On Venom he is bigger than the Hulk with veins popping everywhere and his head basically the same as before. He is cartoonishly big, He is holding Batman by the head like he is a Funko Pop. Think of how big Absolute Batman is. 6’5? That puts Bane at like 20 feet tall? Is the art just embellished just to show how imposing he is? Hopefully. I can also see how Batman beats Bane here. Throws a batarang at his tube and Bane wigs out. That’s how it always goes. I hope I’m wrong.

Review: Batman and Robin #22

Batman and LauTrec read over Blye’s old notes on Memento. Professor Blye had questioned a former detective in Mumbai who claimed that Memento, whom he calls “The Blood Thief”, was a copy cat murderer, reenacting horrific murders of the past. He also accuses Memento of stealing his son’s face. Blye has notes on similar instances occurring all over the world, as far back as Gotham in 1892. Batman is still hesitant to believe that Memento is supernatural, but knows who Damian thinks is related to the case. LauTrec reveals that she knows Batman is “young Jack” from her days training with Professor Blye, and that she is angry he has brought young Robin into this life.

Batman and LauTrec track down Jason Blood, immortal British Occult expert, and host of the rhyming demon Etrigan. Etrigan reveals that Memento is more like a demon that man. He hails from Gotham where two brothers, Nicodemus and Edmund Crowe overdosed on Grave Diggers Poppy, and Edmond died, while Nicodemus starting seeing the supernatural – a rip in reality revealing murder, death and despair, and Nicodemus sells his soul for the secrets there.

Meanwhile, Damian, still imprisoned, is talking with the seemingly undead Professor Blye. Damian asks if Blye is Memento. Blye tells Damian to mind the vestiges, and that if he goes in he will never come out again. We then follow the Irregulars as they find their way into an old underground city from “No Man’s Land” days, where after an earthquake and an accidental drowning, even the squatters leave city alone. Batman and Robin #22 ends with the boys finally coming across Damian, no longer in a cage, but fighting off the grotesque figure of Memento, who upon seeing the boys, lunges at them instead.

Review

I think I’m coming more and more around to this story with Batman and Robin #22. At this point, the things I am enjoying are outweighing the things I dislike.

One thing I really appreciated is the added panels and interactions where the story isn’t necessarily progressing, but we’re getting either a look at the characters -their personalities and relationships, or we just get to see glimpses of Gotham life. The scenes between Katherine and Batman are a good examples. As they travel in the car together to find Jason Blood, they talk about Bruce’s plan to become Batman back when he was learning with her, another trainee with them during that time, and ending up agreeing, after an aggressive discussion, not to kill Blye when they see him.

Jason Blood’s intro to Katherine, and the journey of the Irregulars through the undercity are also great examples of this. Just by the characters talking to each other, or interacting with their environment, we learn more background, without having to endure lengthy exposition.

Batman & Robin 22 Batman finds the Irregulars

Batman & Robin 22 Jason show Katherine is books

And, not to brag, but I totally called that Memento was Etrigan adjacent, and not Etrigan himself.

I do hope that there is more to Memento’s backstory that what Etrigan revealed. A drug trip into a world of death is fine, but leaves a lot unexplained. However, seeing as how this story may still have a bit to go, they can reveal more later. I am an old X-Files fan where you were lucky to get ANY kind of explanation, so perhaps PKJ will go that rout and leave most of Memento’s existence a mystery.

Batman & Robin 22 Katherine thinks Damian deserves better

There are still some things I’m not a fan of. Batman is still hesitant to believe the super natural is at play…even though Jason Blood and Etrigan are IN Gotham. I also fear Katherine’s animosity towards Batman having a young sidekick, Damian’s reluctance to stay Robin, and the crossed out “Robin” on the comic’s cover are all concerning. But I am enjoying the story, the villain, the guest appearances, and the look of the book.

This review contains spoilers

Black Canary, Batgirl Cass Cain, and Sin/Megaera examine the crater left by Big Barda’s landing from space in the UAE.

In Gotham, Oracle evaluates her footage of the attacks – Velvet Tiger (boosted with returned Super Speed powers), Golden Lion, Copperhead – and notes she thinks there’s still a leader hiding. Babs sends a drone to Chinatown following an energy signature.

Dinah, Cass, and Sin find Barda’s Mega Rod, and Magaera/Sin uses it to boom-tube back to Gotham. Babs is relieved to see them unhurt, but she and Dinah fight about safety and decision making in the field. Unresolved, Babs briefs the team on following her drones into Gotham’s Chinatown.

Cass enters the warehouse first, but is thrown out of the window, yelling “abort.” She’s followed by Barda, but covered in shadow and clearly mind controlled. Barda grabs Oracle’s drone and overloads it, also shocking Babs in her VR setup at HQ, knocking her out. Canary takes on Dark Barda, and Magaera slams a huge brick on top of Barda.

Oracle wakes to the sigh of a cat, Poe, with mystical wisps and a purple haired woman from the future, Cela, in HQ. They chat for a while, but then the tech Dinah brought back from Japan activates, and Babs screams for Cela to run. Dinah, Cass, and Sin are almost at HQ when they see it explode!

Analysis

Writer Kelly Thompson and artist Sami Basri once again deliver a Birds of Prey issue with all the action and character interactions that made the classic Dixon and Simone era beloved. While it’s a welcome continuation of the first two issues, there’s still a sense that Thompson is more imitating the surface of those runs without really digging into why Dixon and Simone created such a long beloved piece of DC history with the Birds of Prey. The fight between Babs and Dinah is familiar, but doesn’t really serve that much purpose beyond making Dinah’s distress in the final page more regretful. The hints of the wacky future time travel plot in the appearance of Cela and Poe also don’t bode that well, though again, time travel to the past was a big part of the classic Dixon run, so one cannot begrudge the current BOP writer from enjoying a dabble in that plotting arena, even though neither the past nor the future are this reviewer’s favorite element of Birds of Prey lore.

Sami Basri’s art is once again gorgeous – assisted for most of the pages by Vicente Cifuentes’s assured inking, and Adriano Lucas’s rich coloring, it’s another sexy, action packed, well acted Birds of Prey issue up there with Butch Guice (RIP), Joe Bennet, Ed Benes, and of course the masterful Nicola Scott.

Dinah and Babs fighting about field vs. Oracle decision making is classic, though it feels a bit artificial when Babs could be in the field as Batgirl.

Annie Wu’s main cover shows Babs, her face lit up by the Oracle symbol hanging over her hand, glancing sideways at the reader – simple but bold, as the best of Wu’s work always is! Rian Gonzales’s paper doll variant showcases Big Barda, with some additional chibi Bardas thrown in as well. Serg Acuna’s variant shows Canary and Batgirl rocking out on the microphones to some karaoke – a fun hint at behind the scenes shenanigans. George Perez’s legacy variant showcases his illustration of Dinah in leotard, fishnets, blue jacket, a bird, sonic scream, and cityscape behind her motorcycle – extremely classic. Lastly, Edwin Galmon’s 1 in 25 incentive cover features Barda joyfully riding her huge motorcycle, with Batgirl joyriding behind – another fun behind the scenes hijinks style cover.

Let me know what you think on twitter @ibmmiller, or join the conversation in our Discord!

Final Thoughts

While not offering a ton of new elements, Thompson and Basri continue to serve up classic Birds of Prey action as the team faces the loss of one more of their members, just as they face the last one under mind control!

Batman: Wayne Family Adventures #162-164 Webtoon Review

by Stephanie Mounce June 7, 2025
written by Stephanie Mounce

It’s been only a short time, but Steph and Ian were reading Batman: Wayne Family Adventures #162-164 and were so excited they had to get on discord and chat about it!

Steph: AHHH! Ian! Wayne Family Adventures is getting so close to finishing season 3! Wanna chat with me about it?

Ian: I do wanna chat! This group of episodes is VERY emotional, especially this first one!

Steph: Yea, for sure! 162 – Line in the Sand starts with Cass, Steph, and Lady Shiva are facing off, with Steph defending Cass’s choices.
Lady of Shiva, of course, has made very good points about why Joker should be murderated.

Ian: I think it’s so CLEAR that CRC Payne knows Steph and Cass’s history as Batgirl down to the core. Steph’s key theme in her run is hope – coming back to where you’ve made a mistake and standing up again when you’ve fallen down (also seen in Batman Begins). Her whole speech about why the Batfamily chooses to be heroes got me really misty eyed!

Steph: I really like the way Steph made a cause for hope being strength.

Steph explains Hope Batman: Wayne Family Adventures #162-164 Webtoon Review
And, though I’m glad Steph was in Cass’s corner, I really loved that Cass could step up for herself as well, and set up well established boundaries with Shiva.

Ian: Yep. I like it a lot more than the endless loop of Shiva being weirdly obsessed with Cass in the past 10 years of comics. I still say it was a huge mistake to retcon that family relationship

Steph: Well, the girls invite Shiva to come to the docks as long as she doesn’t do the killing thing,
But then comes my favorite part of the entire season..
Azrael coming to the hostage/bomber’s rescue.

Ian: That was AMAZING

Steph: “DO NOT BE AFRAID”
“AAAAAAAAHHHHHHH”
“I said don’t be afraid”

Azrael Saves the Day Batman: Wayne Family Adventures #162-164 Webtoon Review

Ian: Since Azrael is the angel of vengeance, I love how he says the thing angels always say in the Bible – “Do not be afraid” – but ALSO like angels in the Bible, he’s VERY SCARY!
That was extremely amusing and very theologically accurate!

Steph: It’s the sword.
I really liked Huntress talking to her bomber and getting his story to calm him down a bit while Oracle tried to figure out how defuse his bomb.

Ian: It’s nice seeing Huntress’s teacher side coming out!

Steph: Any last thoughts on 162 before we go to what Batman’s doing?

Ian: I thought Alfred radioing Bruce calling himself Penny-One was a nice Batman Eternal/n52 reference!

Steph: I think he’s been Penny-one this whole time, but it is good they keep that in.

Ian: What do we see as we move into 163 – “One More Miracle”?

Steph: Oh man, the guards are being really bullied by Joker’s goons when the power goes out and Batman knocks out the goons.
The guards, very relieved, run off after telling Batman and Joker is waiting for him on the roof.

Ian: The lights going out was such a CLASSIC Batman moment. Really enjoyed that

Steph: It really was.
he is the night!

Ian: the (k)Night! 😄

Steph: Then came a scene I didn’t quite understand. A Robin comes with a box of Wayne Tech firefighting gear that the fire fighters already have.
I wasn’t quite sure what was going on there, other than it shows that the Firefighters know that some Bat-people are helping.

Ian: Yeah, I think the pacing of the finale isn’t always quite as tight as it could be
maybe it’s supposed to be setup for Tim finding Freeze and needing his help for stopping the fires
?

Steph: I think the story could have done without that scene as it doesn’t add anything.
But then we get to one of Tim’s secrets! He is recruiting Mr. Freeze.

Ian: Yeah. And I say this as a huge fan of the We Are Robins! But every scene should server more than just one purpose

Steph: I agree.
I love the part where Freeze ask Red Robin “are you threatening me?” and Tim says “no. I’m pursuading you. HE’S going to threaten you” and Robin appears with a sword.
That made my little Damian loving heart so happy.

Damian threatens Mr. Freeze Batman: Wayne Family Adventures #162-164 Webtoon Review

Ian: that is CLASSIC Damian for sure
in Steph’s Batgirl run, he was constantly brandishing that sword, though I don’t remember it recently

Steph: Me either! I was thinking that as I was reading.
DC! MOAR SWORDS PLEASE!
Back at the docks, The women are jumping into the fray of Black Mask Vs Penguin. All except Ivy and Steph/Batgirl, who is calling on some Bat-drones for a special secret attack we don’t know about yet!
What do you think about Ivy joining?
Is she skipping the heroes journey and joining the Bats for Harley’s sake or will she get more character development next season?

Ian: I think this Ivy, even though she’s still a villain in that she doesn’t seem to care about helping people other than Harley, is also not terribly evil (like most non-Joker villains in the WFA universe), so she’s on the same level as Mr. Freeze

Steph: Ah. Wife savior or eco-terrorist, but not like…evil, just misguided.

Ian: well. I have my own opinions on Ivy that tend to be much more negative, but in THIS universe, yes.

Steph: yeah. I’ll give her a pass for now, but I would like to see her have more…something in this universe. Not sure what. Repentance, remorse, a personality,…something.

Ian: Apologizing to people for mind controlling them would be a good start!
Mind control is very evil! Just look at Purple Man in Jessica Jones! And Ivy’s done that to a ton of people!

Steph: I feel like this Ivy is the “Harley Quinn” show Ivy without much of a personality, which doesn’t make her much.

Ian: Yeah, that’s a good point!

Steph: other than a plot device
But, either way, just helping out and is doing a lot of bad guy taking out in episode 164 – Shall We Play a Game?
The first few panels are just a bunch of awesome kick butt scense from all the Sirens and Batgirls.

Cass Batgirl takes out goon Batman: Wayne Family Adventures #162-164 Webtoon Review

Ian: I really like how Steph says her catchphrase about “Spoiling” the villains at the end of 163 and then that carries through in 164.
Really nice setup and payoff there

Steph: Oh for sure! And I love that it wasn’t violent, it was mind games/the truth
Sionis has been selling off “useless” henchmen to Joker to be used as hostages, three of which are strapped to bomber jackets as they are all fighting!

Ian: Steph is all about the Truth! Her using her drones to capture the truth about Black Mask betraying his own men was PERFECT Spoiling! Going straight back to her origin in Detective Comics 647-649, where she exposes her father’s villainy!
As a Steph fan, this was just A A A Plus use of her character and history.

Steph: I love it. And because of her spoiling, half the fighters on the field step off, feeling no loyalty to Black Mask anymore.
I really liked her beating him up so we would be quiet for her spiel.

Steph Batgirl Kicks Black Mask's butt Batman: Wayne Family Adventures #162-164 Webtoon Review

Ian: Big impact for Steph’s actions – especially because she also shows that she has conquered her fear from him torturing her nearly to death in War Games (which is directly quoted from Robin #131 – again, CRC Payne just has the history of these characters on LOCKDOWN.)

Steph: ❤️
Doing the Steph’s of this world proud
Unfortunately, this tactic doesn’t do much for Penguin and his men, and he’s not willing to back down! Story to be continued…
Man, this was a pretty Steph heavy set of episodes! I bet that made you super happy.

Ian: Pengy needs to take a line from his Iceberg lounge and CHILL!
I was indeed super happy! Steph’s arc took a LONG time to show up in the season, but I feel the payoff was very worth the wait.

Steph: So, Steph had her big moment, Cass is at peace with where she is, Tim has come into his leadership role…there’s not much left to do on a personal level. The last few episodes may just be a rip-roaring, action packed, finale! What do you think?

Ian: I hope so! Though I think Duke will have a part to play – still don’t know what that private call from Tim was about!

Steph: And how is Batman doing? It’s taking so long for him to get to the roof!

Ian: those are a lot of stairs, ok!

Steph: I’m excited that the season is ending, because I want to know how the story ends, and I’m excited to see what season 4 will be like!

Ian: Have we gotten an announcement of season 4?

Steph: Not sure, but I mean…how could they not?

Ian: Well, CRC Payne is working on the Harley Quinn webtoon for DCUniverse Infinite currently
But you could be right! I hope so!
