As DC K.O.: Knightfight #4 opens, Bruce is finally happy. Damian is Batman. Gotham is safe. And he has a grandson. He thinks about how never envisioned he would play the role of grandpa and have his grandson run into his arms after school.

Bruce knows that this is a game for the Heart of Apokolips and how he has to fight this world to get back into the tournament but he is not sure how. Damian calls a family meeting and we see members of the Bat Family all grown up as Damian has a plan to save Bruce but to keep this world alive. Bruce trains with the Bat Family and learns about their lives and how happy they all are.

Bruce and Damian have the fight that the Heart wants. Damian gets the upper hand and yells at Bruce to get up. Bruce says he can’t. He says he can’t win. The Heart says the test is complete. The Heart says the test was to see if he could ever admit defeat.

As DC K.O.: Knightfight #4 ends, Bruce can re-enter the tournament and leaps into the fire ready to fight to become King Omega.

Analysis

Mora again is king here. His art remains elite. He is the best at DC right now and I don’t think that is some crazy hot take. His fight scenes between Bruce and the four Batmen were great throughout this miniseries. The way he designed the alternate Batsuits was great and very distinct to their characters.

Williamson is another creator that I am a big fan of. The scenes with Bruce and little Alfred were great and emotional. I wish we could get more of his world with Grandpa Bruce and Bat Damian. Williamson did leave a backdoor open with a motherbox left to Damian and we may see these alternate Batmen show up in DC KO to help Bruce with his quest to become King Omega.

I really like this miniseries tie-in. I would say that minis like that have a low batting percentage but I think this was a worthy tie in and is a must read. Usually tie-ins are very skippable but I don’t think this is. It is worth it and I hope people pick it up.

After Damian as Robin called Bruce “Father” while Bruce was not in costume as Batman last issue, Bruce and Dr. Annika Zellar sit very awkwardly in an ambulance. Bruce tries to explain, but Dr. Zellar says she can’t be in more danger than ninja assassins trying to kill her. Bruce leaves after apologizing, also leaving his present of indestructible material for the doctor.

Damian is training on a punching bag as Bruce finds him in Pennyworth Manor, and Bruce breaks the bag and bitterly tells Damian he’s made a huge mistake. Damian leaves, seemingly dejected, as Bruce hears ghostly Alfred’s worried chiding.

At old Wayne Manor, the crime bosses who all had close friends or family members (or penguins, for the Penguin) slaughtered in front of them leave in their black limos.

Huge Strange rages at one of those crime bosses for failing to assassinate Dr. Zellar, and declares his plan goes into effect tomorrow night.

page from batman #6 showing Bruce give Damian a stern talk

Bruce is NOT happy… (DC Comics)

Meanwhile, Harvey Bullock gets the evidence that Commissioner Vandal Savage planted evidence to frame Batman for killing cops.

At the ports, Batman saves a lady from rampaging monster men, but as he fights the giant green guys, a huge task force of police try to slaughter Batman and monsters alike. Batman has the Batmobile smash through their line, then heads out.

At Pennyworth Manor again, Tim tells Bruce he’s taking a break from Robin to try to have a normal life with Bernard. Bruce is happy for Tim, but Damian feels like Tim is a deserter.

The main story ends with Batman, the crime lord who failed to kill Dr. Zeller, Damian, and Dr. Zellar all sitting down, exhausted.

Epilogue: Dr. Zellar talks to what appears to be the Joker in a tank, who is burning out all of her titanographene (the indestructible material Bruce gave her a box of), and Joker says he’s reaching out to his very best friend.

Analysis

After five pretty stellar issues of Batman, Fraction and Jimenez deliver a much more mixed bag with Batman #6. The idea of a whole issue of fallout from the date night is fine, and most of it works, from the progression of the Vandal Savage/Minotaur crime syndicate plotline, to Batman’s family drama, to Hugo Strange apparently having a Monster Men mini-plotline, but it’s a bit odd that so much seems to happen in just the one night, with two returns to the Batcave (unless this is a non-sequential timeline story, which is possible, but seems unlikely given the emotional sequence of the Bruce and Damian vs Bruce and Tim and then Tim and Damian scenes. All the pieces, while generally executed brilliantly, don’t quite flow together in the same way that one hopes for the standalone issue structure used by Fraction so far.

I have to say, though, that the revelation that Dr. Zellar thinks Damian is only Bruce’s son, and not that Bruce is Batman, was pretty halfhearted as a “reveal” after last issue. The opening and closing structure is quite cleverly done with the three pages of sitting and the one page of four main characters sitting. Speaking of which, the opening being three pages of Bruce and Dr. Annika Zeller sitting awkwardly after the last page of last issue is both effective and a bit amusing after J. Michael Straczynski caught a bit of flak on twitter recently for having two pages of his villain sitting, depressed, while Spider-Man tries to get her to fight (Amazing Spider-Man: Torn). Decompression is back, baby!

The “Wollstonecrafts, Inc.” pun—a nod to Mary Shelley’s maiden name—is a classic Fraction-style Easter egg. However, the attempt to frame Tim and Bernard as a “great love story” worth retiring for feels unearned.

Between Bernard’s lack of interaction with Tim and the glaring continuity error regarding Bernard knowing Tim’s identity, the “star-crossed lovers” angle falls flat. While a retcon is sometimes necessary, this one feels forced. Hopefully, as Fraction continues this long-term arc with Bruce, Tim, and Damian, we’ll get a conclusion that feels more grounded and convincing.

Jorge Jimenez’s art is pretty spectacularly energetic and fun as usual, though I’m curious if all the time-saving devices deployed – three pages of very little changing, two pages of panels being alternated with blacked out panels at the end – are deliberate to try to keep the schedule of the book.

Jorge Jimenez’s cover for Batman #6, as usual, is very eye-catching – showing Batman kicking the teeth out of some monsters in a construction setting (also available in a virgin foil variant). Jim Lee’s cover, featuring the spoiler of Tim leaving the Batcave, background of a bunch of orange Tim Drake comic covers, homaging the classic John Byrne cover. Julian Totino Tedesco’s painterly variant features Batman being grabbed by a bunch of huge green monster hands – extremely creepy. Gerald Parel’s variant features a classic, Frank Miller-esque but more realistically rendered Batman gritting his teeth over an injury in his side.

Jorge Jimenez also provided the Bat-Gadget variant, this time with the Batsuit and gauntlets, full of blueprint details. Chrissie Zullo Uminga’s Valentine’s Day variant features a very cute Batman and Catwoman on a chimney, tied up in Catwoman’s whip, and a cat on top! The 1 in 25 incentive variant by David Aja featuring Batman with a flashlight investigating from a doorframe, which doubles as a scary monster outline above Batman in humorous but also starkly designed and appealing imagery!

Final Thoughts

Some fun action sequences and nice structural elements don’t quite make Batman #6 hang together as it a few of its story beats don’t hit home.

This review contains spoilers

Harley & Ivy: Life and Crimes #3 begins amid the ruins of Ace Chemical as Harley and Ivy go looking for the Joker and discover the Clown Prince of Crime’s…unique approach to romantic gestures. The pair are hoping to convince Joker to clear their names after being framed for his recent crime spree, and it appears that Joker might be amenable to that since he has littered the factory floor with dead bodies, using several to create a heart-shaped apology note to Harley.

Ivy expresses disgust at the macabre display, but Harley is taken aback by the grand gesture from “Mistah J”.
Ivy calls Harley out, reminding her of the beating Joker recently inflicted on her (along with the many insults and previous violence). Harley’s resolve is further tested as Joker appears in the flesh (still wearing the gruesome mask he made from his own ruined face).

Joker is all creepy smiles and sweet nothings as he approaches the pair.  Harley rages against Joker’s unexpected apology, but has an abrupt change of heart (to Ivy’s apparent shock and surprise). Harley makes Joker promise that he will fix things with the GCPD (how?) and that Ivy can join them. Joker agrees but stares daggers at Ivy behind Harley’s back. Joker adds that he knew she couldn’t stay away from him, to which Harley replies, “I knew you’d think that.”

Harley bolts, leaving a startled Joker at the mercy of Ivy’s giant vines. Harley grabs onto Ivy and the pair are cocooned in more vines as they smash through one of the factory’s walls, and are deposited gently onto the ground outside as the factory collapses. In the rush and thrill of pulling off their plan, Harley and Ivy give into their feelings. Sometime later, the newly minted couple engage in some pillow talk while lying on the ground.

Harley & Ivy: Life and Crimes #3 ends with the nearly bare-naked duo surprised by the spotlight from a GCPD helicopter as they are ordered to surrender.

Analysis

Harley & Ivy: Life and Crimes #3 functions essentially as a one-act play that speed plots its way through some of the weighty issues involving the darker aspects of Joker and Harley’s romantic/abusive past. It is important to not gloss over this material as it is integral to the story and to all three characters despite drawing elements from a cartoon series. Writer/artist Erica Henderson approaches this series with a sense of seriousness as well as a dose of humor that breaks the tension and is probably one of Harley’s key defense mechanisms.

In rereading the opening pages of Harley & Ivy: Life and Crimes #3, exactly how much of Harley’s reaction to Joker’s romantic gestures are genuine is unclear, but despite any misgivings she might have about betraying her former paramour she goes through with the plan, such as it is. For two intelligent women what was the plan exactly? Their gambit works if they just wanted to just get rid of him (fat chance of that though) so he couldn’t frame them for more of his crimes, but it resembles more Ray Stantz’s ‘get her’ approach in the opening part of the 1984 Ghostbusters movie.

Obviously Joker will survive and there is more story to tell in this series, but Henderson’s storytelling is metaphorical in parts, as the tangle of vines ensnaring Joker act like a Venus flytrap, whereas Harley and Ivy are cocooned and taken to safety, literally smashing through the walls of Ace Chemicals, the birthplace of both Joker and Harley. Harley & Ivy: Life and Crimes #3 is yet another violent rebirth for Harley Quinn, but one that portends a happier future.

Henderson’s art continues to evoke the classic style of Batman The Animated Series (TAS), with a decidedly darker touch (Joker’s gruesome display with the dead bodies for instance). Henderson also masterfully depicts Harley’s varied facial expressions, exaggerated for dramatic effect.  Remarkably, the crackling script speeds the story along so fast that it ends feeling like there should be more in the issue. From ominous dread, to unexpected betrayal, to liberation, all in one well-produced issue.

Final Thoughts

Harley & Ivy: Life and Crimes #3 continues to chug along as an entertaining, unsettling and heartfelt series, making great strides in exploring this unusual romantic origin story. While the dramatic and dangerous aspects loom large, hope, heart and emotional vulnerability win the day (mostly).

Harley Quinn #58 Comics Book Review

by Adam Koppel January 28, 2026
written by Adam Koppel

In this review of Harley Quinn #58, Harley attempts to help her neighborhood in the aftermath of The Deconspirator’s chaos, but while Althea Klang is still around, a new antagonist makes themselves known, and Richie Grimaldi scores a date with a Gunbuddy.

This review contains spoilers

Harley Quinn #58 begins as the community of Throatcutter Hill mourn the loss of one of their own as Harley and her new allies, The Gunbuddies and Convoy survey the wreckage Deconspirator left in his wake. Harley realizes there is still one more menace to remove from her beloved neighborhood: Althea Klang, Harley’s enemy/frenemy/current crush. At Nowegosoe tower (it’s an acronym), Harley does her level best to annoy Althea into leaving (cue the humorous montage) while Ms. Klang misinterprets Harley’s actions as affection.

Time passes and Harley has run out of ideas to drive Althea out of town (after bagpipes and using Richie Grimaldi’s sound enhanced armor) , when a zeppelin appears in the sky overhead, wreaking more havoc for the embattled neighborhood neighborhood. Richie gives Harley a lift to Althea as the new menace reveals himself to be (one-off) Batman villain, Colonel Blimp. The colonel bloviates as he struts down the gangplank, declaring himself in charge of Throatcutter Hill.

Harley, Althea and head stooge Amygdala make short work of the colonel whose assortment of vintage firearms prove lacking. In a swift turn of events, Colonel Blimp begs for sanctuary from Harley, and if that isn’t bad enough, a helicopter suddenly appears, demanding Colonel Blimp’s surrender in the name of former (gross-out) Harley nemesis Guy Mandrake.  Apparently the recent power grab in Gotham City is forcing D-list villains to fight over the remaining scraps, including Harley’s neighborhood.

After Amygdala’s failed frontal attack, Harley repels a missile attack with only her trusty baseball bat. The redirected missile obliterates the helicopter, but the pilot parachutes to, well, not to safety, because Harley’s there, but at least he’s not dead. Harley’s about had it with all of the chaos, and declares Throatcutter Hill to be off limits.

Harley Quinn #58 ends with armored Richie dragging Colonel Blimp’s “Crime Zeppelin” to the local dump, while Harley tells Althea to get gussied up because they’re finally going on a date.

Analysis

Harley Quinn #58 certainly packs the story with enough goings-on, from the aftermath of The Deconspirator’s reign of terror, to all-new attempted reigns of terror in what isn’t already on fire. Writer Elliot Kalan redirects Harley’s focus back to safeguarding her neighborhood from a new threat, outside agitators, aka Gotham’s D-list. Of course, it isn’t Harley’s fault that she was absconded with her now friends, The Gunbuddies (and Convoy).

Kalan continues to populate this series with previously established absurdist nemeses that fit seamlessly into the heightened reality of Harley’s world. From Colonel Blimp, a previous one-off Batman villain, to Guy Mandrake, a previous one-off Harley antagonist (although only by proxy as Guy doesn’t make an actual appearance). The hits just keep on coming as Harley juggles the well-being of her friends and neighbors while she attempts and fails to rid frenemy/love interest Althea Klang from Nowegosoe Tower.

Harley and Althea might finally, after many issues, attempt to see if they can at least make it through one date without being targeted by some oddball with a grudge and a dream. Harley is also a source of comfort for her neighbors, attempting to console those who mourn the loss of one of their own. Richie Grimaldi shows a little growth after recently investing in villain armor as he scores a date with Gunbunny (much to Mayfly’s dismay). Kalan’s script, as usual, is peppered with clever one-liners and expositional speeches that inform and entertain.

Carlos Olivares continues to delight with his wild and imaginative artwork, from exaggerated facial expressions and body language to the lived-in feel of the Throatcutter Hill neighborhood, (complete with battle damage). Olivares’ scale and scope explore the neighborhood, and emphasize the looming almost-threats of both Colonel Blimp and Guy Mandrake, as Olivares’ pacing adds to sense of urgency, while still throwing in some clever sight gags and a montage.

Final Thoughts

Harley Quinn #58 keeps the story moving with another strange adventure that piles onto the already beleaguered anti-hero’s to-do list, with a mix of absurdity and genuine warmth. The inventive and detailed art matches the frenetic pacing of the script, making this title a joy to read month-after-month.

Detective Comics #1105 Comic Book Review

by Adam Koppel January 28, 2026

In this review of Detective Comics #1105, now fully infected by the Courage virus, Batman continues his investigation while hermetically sealed in a special suit of armor as he attempts to locate The Lion and prevent an expected attack.

This review contains spoilers

Detective Comics #1105 begins with a flashback to Batman’s early days as Commissioner Gordon visits thirteen year-old Leo Kingsford just after Batman absconded with his father. Young Leo lashes out in anger at Gordon, calling out for his father. Four years later Leo wins a Waynetech science fair and Bruce Wayne visits the now fearful and agoraphobic Leo in his foster home.

Cut to the present as an armored and infectious Batman explores Leo’s old bedroom as he surmises that Leo got his foster mother out of Gotham before he enacts his plan. Batman tells Batgirl he is going to visit Dinah Lance (Black Canary) as Batgirl arrives at GCPD headquarters where a full blown riot erupts outside.

Batman asks Dinah Lance about Leo’s time at the gym training with Ted Grant (Wildcat) and his growing confidence after learning to fight. Leo was headed for the big time but something changed after losing a bout to Dinah, his fear returned and Leo left for good. Batman checks in with Mister Terrific who is monitoring the boy Batman rescued from the infected freighter and it appears the boy is a danger to himself and others if a cure is not found soon.

Terrific shows Batman the lab where he and numerous heroes and villains (Scarecrow) are toiling at developing a cure for the Courage virus. Despite his shaky judgement (or possibly because of it), Batman volunteers to be the test subject for any vaccine trial for the cure. Back at the Batcave he receives an alert of an attack on Wayne Manor. Batman circles around and catches the firebug off guard but comes face-to-face with The Lion yet again.

Detective Comics #1105 ends with Robin (Damian Wayne) caught in an explosion while investigating a tip, as the riot at the GCPD rages on, while Batgirl lies unconscious. Wayne Manor burns as Leo monologues, gleefully declaring that the attack on Gotham City has already happened (from the man-made fog in Detective Comics #1101), without Batman and his team even realizing it.

Analysis

Detective Comics #1105 ramps up the tension as writer Tom Taylor reveals more clues courtesy of Leo’s exposition (but most people probably caught on with Robin’s actions last issue). The rioting at GCPD, Robin’s reckless behavior are certainly signs, but others like Terrific’s team or Batgirl Who is literally out on patrol seem affected. Probably an explanation, or they’ll succumb eventually.

Detective Comics #1105 is a race against time where Batman and his allies wasted precious hours exploring Leo’s clues across the globe when the danger had already occurred. Batman has become more confident which remarkably makes him more concerned about not being concerned and continues to question his own motivations. With at least six issues, Taylor allows the story to breathe and the tension to build.

The exchange between Batman and Leo as The Lion casually adds to the flames consuming Wayne Manor and neither man are at all alarmed by the growing danger illustrates the danger. But at least Batman is sealed in armor and aware of his infection, Robin and other citizens in Gotham City don’t understand (or care) about the danger they might face.

Artist Mikel Janin nails another issue loaded with gorgeous visuals and colors. The design for Batman’s sealed armor makes the Dark Knight appear bulky, imposing and inhuman, the full face mask is intense image. Janin provides a remarkable amount of detail to the Bat-armor (among other items) adding to its “lived in” feel and slapdash assembly.

Janin also excels at utilizing shadows for mood along with the sickly green background for both Mister Terrific’s lab and the Batcave. In contrast, the flame effects towards the end of Detective Comics #1105 are bright and vibrant, full of warm reds, pale yellows and orange. That final full splash page with the carnage at the GCPD framed by a stark red sky in the background is effective and unsettling.

Final Thoughts

Detective Comics #1105 ramps up the tension while giving Batman a metaphorical smack in the nose for not realizing he was missing the bigger picture. Batman’s growing self doubt and Leo’s overconfidence makes for a thrilling contrast. The story, art and color also maintain their high quality.

Chip Zdarsky is a funny guy. Remember when he made that whole April Fools’ gag comic with rub ‘n’ smell farts? Oh, wait, that was me, DC Comics E-I-C Marie Javins. Chip was the one saying, “I’d turn back if I were you,” but he couldn’t stop me. Editors are a self-destructive lot. Which is why this year, I said, “I give up, you do it, Chip, you are so much funnier and prettier and also better with cats than I am.” And look, he went and did it. Chip demoted himself to “editor.” Chip is turning the DC universe on its ear and bringing you savage mockery of all we hold dear, and he is assisted in this brutal task by Matt Fraction, Gail Simone, Skottie Young, and many, many more. Next year? Back to farts.
Includes MAD favorite Sergio Aragones with “A MAD Look at Comic Book Stores,” “Guy vs. Spy” by Jim Zub and Ramon Perez, and a DC Fold-In by Charles Soule and Ryan Browne. Plus a slew of MAD-style parodies of all DC Comics you hold dear, and some you’ve always hated anyway. MAD About DC #1 will fulfill your every comic book dream, or at least three or four of them.
