This next batch of gifts you wished you'd asked for is concerning some of the greats when it comes to comic book, whether you're new to the medium and not sure where to start or continuing your collection, there is a range of titles for every reader…
Comic Books:
Batman: Noel
I thought we'd start off with the only original graphic novel on the list which is fitting as not only is it suitable for both new and old readers alike, it is set around the Christmas period. Batman: Noel, written and drawn by Lee Bermejo, is a modern take on Dickins' classic tale 'A Christmas Tale'.
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
Not a particularly 'Christmas-sy' book but considered by many to be one of the greatest comics stories ever told. This classic tale by the legendary Frank Miller still holds up today as an amazing graphic novel. If you haven't already read it, this should be at the top of your list.
Batman: The Killing Joke
Another must read comic book, Batman: The Killing Joke, written by the legendary Alan Moore with fantastic art by Brian Bolland, is often defined as the Joker book. A story that changes the lives of two Batman Universe characters forever (or at least up until post-Flashpoint), this is simply an unmissable book.
Batman: The Long Halloween
This is the last of the classic books that we will be putting forward as a great gift but Batman: The Long Halloween, written by Jeph Loeb with art by Tim Sale, find its place on this list because it is perhaps the greatest of Batman's mystery tales which shows his detective skills at their peak. A well written, beautifully drawn book that is well deserving of its classic status.
Batman and Robin: Batman Must Die
The final installment from Grant Morrison's award winning run on Batman & Robin sees the dramatic conclusion to the 'Return of Bruce Wayne' as well as the events leading directly into Batman Incorporated. This isn't the most new-reader-friendly of the books on the list but it's on the list for a reason; being one of the best releases this year! The book adds so much to the current continuity and that backed up with the slew of talented artists that worked on this book, it is a must read.
Batman: The Black Mirror
Get this book whilst you still can in its first printing because it is destined to become a classic! Scott Snyder's debut to Batman, alongside the artistic talents of both Jock and Francesco Francavilla, smashed all expectations and became the most sought after title in the Batman Universe during its release. An original story from an up and coming star writer which has blown all of its readers away.
Check back again soon at The Batman Universe to see the next installment of the TBU After Christmas List where we will look at media-related gifts, covering movies, television and video games.
