Dick Grayson’s attempt to make a name for himself outside of Batman’s influence is made more complicated by a confrontation with his replacement- Jason Todd. The upcoming Teen Titans series is set to premiere on October 12 and the comic-con released trailer has cued fans into what might be some boiling tension in the Bat-Family. This is the first time Jason Todd will make a live-action appearance, marking a historic live action encounter for him and the former boy wonder. IGN shared some exclusive first looks at Jason Todd from the series.
Show-runner Greg Walker is excited about the chance to explore Jason and Dick as characters and bring their complex personalities to life.
“It’s kind of like one of those classic covers of the books, original versus number 2, and in many ways, you really see that [in the photos]. This encapsulates the tension, the energy between these two guys. It’s like running into your ex-girlfriend’s new boyfriend, minus the sexual tension,” Walker laughed. “You get to watch Dick Grayson struggle when he sees another Robin and how that Robin is different and has a different relationship with ‘dad.’ And the second child gets away with stuff the first child would never get away within a family, and ours is really a family show.”
The iconic team is being brought to life by a flurry of lesser-known names. Dick Grayson will be played by Brenton Thwaites, while Jason Todd will be played by Curran Walters. The show also stars Anna Diop as Starfire, Ryan Potter as Beast Boy, and Teagan Croft as Raven.
Photos and clips of the show have been officially released (including the one above from Entertainment Weekly) since Comic Con in the build-up to the show’s premiere. This comes after a controversial leak of on-set photos caused issues for the cast and angered some fans over the summer. The series has had a long road, including a false start in 2014 when the pilot episode was turned down by TNT. That hasn’t stopped cast and crew members from expressing pride in the shows creation in anticipation of of the October premiere.
“The Titans always feel relevant because it’s about characters that are lost and found families. That will always be relevant, because it’s human.”
The show will be airing on DC’s new streaming service DC Universe next month.
