2020 was an odd year and while at the time it was a year that was meant as a transition time for DC Films, 2021 originally had two major films planned to release. With the global pandemic causing theaters to close and filming productions to be shut down, there was doubt on what would actually release in 2021. One film that is still coming is James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.
Warner Bros. has released the official synopsis for the film and while it does not give a whole ton of details, there are a few things that stand out.
Welcome to hell — a.k.a. Bell Reve, the prison with the highest mortality rate in the US of A. Where the worst Super-Villains are kept and where they will do anything to get out — even join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X. Today’s do-or-die assignment? Assemble a collection of cons, including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin, and everyone’s favorite pyscho, Harley Quinn. Then arm them heavily and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese.
While the cast was known and their roles revealed last year during DC FanDome, the featurette they showed matches this description. The island of Corto Maltese is best known for being present in Batman: The Dark Knight Returns as the island where a conflict takes place that prompts Superman’s presence during the Cold War. Its namesake has also been mentioned in Batman (1989) and other forms of DC media.
With fan-favorite Harley Quinn returning and Batman Universe characters of Polka-Dot Man and Ratcatcher making their film debuts, are you looking forward to the film this August? In the meantime, the film is planned to release on August 6 in theaters and on HBO Max, so mark your calendars now.
